Universal diesel rebuilding

I'm looking to purchase a c30 1982 with the universal diesel engine, that is not working,i would like to have some information on how much it can cost to rebuild an engine like this one and can it be rebuild.tank's Marc

subtract $8000 from the price for a new one.

Marc:If you really think that it needs to be rebuilt then you should look at the price of a new one $5000-8000 and deduct that much for the engine not working.As Vic mentioned why do you think it needs a rebuild? May just need some work to make it come back to life.I'd have someone give you an idea of where you are on this engine before you make any offer. You need a survey anyway so maybe when they do the engine survey they may be able to determine what is wrong.I hope this is a really good deal. There are plenty of Cat 30s' avail. so shop around and be sure this is really the BEST deal.

Marc, My understanding of a good survey is

that for a reasonable additional cost (about $250/300 US)you can get a very through in depth survey of the engine and drive train. Because of your concerns about the engine and its large cost I would have this done. It could be that the cost to repair the drive train might be better than half the purchase price of the boat.We resently looked at a 1980 40 foot boat that the owner was going to build and sail. He had a hull with deck supplied by the manufacturer and had done about 1/2 of the interior work. He had done nothing on, or above, the deck. Had he given me the boat for free, the cost to finish and rig would have been almost twice the value of the boat. Not a good deal.My dream and goals are to sail, not build a boat. I don't want to spend my money and all my time trying to fix up a "good deal". Some repairs are ok if you are handy in this field, but probably not a total engine overhaul.RayS/V Speedy
