Marc, My understanding of a good survey is
that for a reasonable additional cost (about $250/300 US)you can get a very through in depth survey of the engine and drive train. Because of your concerns about the engine and its large cost I would have this done. It could be that the cost to repair the drive train might be better than half the purchase price of the boat.We resently looked at a 1980 40 foot boat that the owner was going to build and sail. He had a hull with deck supplied by the manufacturer and had done about 1/2 of the interior work. He had done nothing on, or above, the deck. Had he given me the boat for free, the cost to finish and rig would have been almost twice the value of the boat. Not a good deal.My dream and goals are to sail, not build a boat. I don't want to spend my money and all my time trying to fix up a "good deal". Some repairs are ok if you are handy in this field, but probably not a total engine overhaul.RayS/V Speedy
