My friend has been paying a Marina to try and fix a surging problem on his 2 cyl engine. So far he has replaced the fuel tank (marina said that it couldn't be cleaned) replaced the filters, and injectors. Now the engine will start only some times, it cranks, but will not fire up. Other times it starts and runs. He has not run it long enough to see if it still surges. My question to the group is, do you think the problem is anything besides dirt, air or leaks in the fuel system? When running there is no black smoke that would indicate a clogged exhaust elbow. Any ideas???

Probably need more bleeding

After all that fuel system work I'll bet the system still has some air in it. Surging is usually an injector with a drip so you may have solved the problem. Check the fuel lines for "high spots" that would trap an air bubble. Good luck

Lift pump?

I would suggest using a transparent fuel line between the filter and the injection pump while troubleshooting. You will be able to see if there is any air in the system and also if there is not enough pressure from the lift pump you will see it collapse because of the vaccum from the injection pump. If the diesel flow is fine then you need to worry about some more serious stuff. Black smoke can clogg an exhaust elbow but the fact that there is no black smoke doesn't mean its not clogged.
