Universal Diesel 2 cly

I am thinking of buying a 1983 Catalina 27 with a 2 cly. universal diesel. I think it is 11 h.p.Has anyone have any experience, or comments as to the reliability and service problems?

I have a 1983 O'Day 28 with a 11 hp universal MD 15 diesel. I find it to be very reliable. Mind is raw water cooled but since I am in fresh water this is no problem: however, there are plenty of them in salt water and they seem to do o.k.My boat is a little underpowered.Good Luck

Lonnie; I used to have an '82 C-30 with the 5411. It ran well, had plenty of power, even with a two-blade folding prop and only sipped fuel. Keep the thermostat clean and your fuel tank above a quarter tank full. Take the fuel draw tube out of the tank and check for a small screen on the end; if one is there, cut it off and throw it away. Install a squeeze bulb between the fuel tank and the pump for bleeding the system and make sure the water pump is the newer kind. That said, they're great little engines.
