I have a 1980 Oday 30 with 16hp Universal diesel. The Oberdorfer pump is leaking around the shaft. Can I easily rebuilt it? Should I give it to a mechanic? Should I buy a new pump?
Have you been regularly filling and tightening the grease cup on the shaft? That grease is essentially the packing for the pump and if neglected will allow it to leak. The leaking sea water will eat a hole in your engine. The shaft and bearings may have become scored, though. Easy enough to rebuild but cheap enough to replace.
