Universal Atomic Diesel......and Tall Rig vs Standard Rig questions

This week I purchased an '83 Catalina 30 (HIYN2971M83C).
The engine, a Atomic Diesel, believed to be model #5411, has an issue. It starts up, easily idles, and can accelerate in neutral. But, when I put it in gear (reverse or forward), I advance the throttle..... but it will only idle. I haven't really had a chance to look, as I haven't taken possession of the boat yet. Could it be an easy fix with the throttle....or could it be more serious?
2nd question: I'm ordering new sails and I'm not sure if it's a Tall Rig, or Standard. Does the HIN give any clues? And, there is no bow platform....so does this mean it's a Standard Rig?

Tall Rigs have a bow sprit. No HIN does not give it away, but Catalina yachts can give you whatever you need to know about the rig as built((818) 884-7700). I would guess your issues in gear have to do with something on the prop obstructing it's movement.

Does the motor bog down, or just stay at idle with no change in sound?

I show a tall rig has a mainsail hoist of 36.9ft, the standard rig is 35ft. If in doubt, run a measuring tape up the main halyard.

Again..., no bow sprit , no tall rig.

I just confirmed with the Catalina factory that it is indeed a 'standard' rig.
Now, if I can just resolve my idling diesel.

Do you have separate throttle and shift levers, or one lever that does both? And same question asked previously, when you try to speed up does the engine sound change at all? If single lever and no sound change I'd say there is something wrong with the lever mechanism rather than the engine. When the throttle is advanced you should be able to see the lever on the starboard forward corner of the engine move. I can't see how that could be different with the trans in or out of gear, but that's what you're describing.

To verify engine model, the 5411 is a two cylinder with the Kubota model number "Z500" stamped on the dip stick.

That's bow sprit, not pulpit. That's the wood platform extending forward of the bow that the head stay is attached to. No sprit equals standard rig.

I have heard tell of talls without a bobstay or sprint but could be wrong. As it is the boat is 33 years old and a PO could have easily replaced the mast on a lark or because they did something like hit a bridge. Measuring to be sure is best choice and it is good to know your air draft for bridges. Only one way to be sure.

Emmet, I just purchased a '77 with I assume a standard rig and the 11 hp diesel. I know she is under-powered but I sail in a lake and I think I will be fine! I pick her up next weekend and will report back on the mailsail hoist! :) Have a great summer enjoying the Catalina 30! I hope I can report the same! By the way, I do have two levers and she purrs like a "Cat"! Also, my HIN begins with CTYN and I have hull#562. I'm not sure where your HIN came from, any ideas?

Catalina was very helpful with my inquiry. According to Catalina....my HIN : CTYN2971M83C...... meaning, CTYN (Catalina) N (model 30) 2971 (hull #) M (just a spacer) 83 (manufacture year) C (Oct, month of build).
And they verified that this C30 was build as standard. There's no way to know of some previous owner changed the rig to 'tall'.
I took possion of my boat (named AMITIE, french word meaning friendship....now if I could only determine how to pronounce it) last Wed. I'll have it transported to the Dallas area (about 65 miles) on Jun 1st.

Emmet, mine has no name and I am glad about that! She's an oldie but a goodie, the cushions were recently replaced and the sails are like new(5 years old and only used a couple of times)! I hope to have lots of fun with her and I suspect this is my last boat for a while. There's a 37' Pacific Seacraft(Crelock) in the marina that is gorgeous and I drool over it every time I see her! The owner takes her out once every year or two and it is just sad! Oh well, I'm happy with my Catalina!

Go to Bacons. It is a consignment store abd also will make sails. They have an index with just about every sailboat made and all the dimensions for ordering sails. You will see both sd and tall with the numbers. Measure yours and look it up.

I helped a friend replace the exhaust hose on his boat when he had a very similar problem. The hose was so old that it was collapsing when advancing the throttle. Blocking most of the flow.
