Catalina 30 San Diego, CA
Hello!

I currently live in the San Diego area on a Catalina 30'. My Universal 5411 engine is in need of a rebuild... or replaced. My budget is $2500. Does anyone know where to go in the SoCal area to rebuild the engine or advice on what kind of engine to replace it with...

Any advice would be helpful!

Thanks!!!

5411 Replacement

Have a look at these guys:

There's significant shipping involved but it's a place to start. I would add that for reasons of sufficient power, Catalina finally settled on a 3 cylinder diesel. An engine upgrade is a huge commitment, a rebuild or swap like-for-like not as much.
I Purchased a remanufactured M-18 (same block size as 5411 only 14 hp) from Al at Schooner Bay Marine via Diesel Trader and they are excellent. You can probably replace your 5411 with a remanufactured one for less than $3,000. Note you may get into other parts you decide to replace, i.e. engine mounts, muffler, exhaust header.....then the price can really escalate.

Good luck!

I have a C30 1980 with the pitiful 5411 too, but its a good runner, and I can't legitimize tearing out a perfectly good running engine, for a few more horses. After all, it is a SAIL boat, & the engine was really designed like most 80s boats, to get it outta the marina, where your suppose to sail it from there. I would love to get my hands on a MX25, but I would probably have to sell mine to move up later on down the pike. I would always advocate rebuilding what you've got before replacement - because U know it fits & its always cheaper to rebuild than replace. I'll take a lil' diesel over a bigger Atomic Bomb any day. Diesel is always an asset, gas a liability.
