So I believe my issue in my little engine is starvation. I have no clue how old my fuel pump is, I do know it was sitting unused for 15 years prior to yesterday. I have 2 questions about this.

1. Where can I get a good quality replacement for the mechanical lift pump?

2. Is there any issues running an electric pump on this engine?

And for those who have not seen my refit thread here is what’s going on with my little engine.

First off it sat for 15 years. My fuel tank was removed and cleaned, my fuel lines replaced, and a new filter installed. I have had to replace the starter, and my battery is also brand new. My throttle and shift cables are not currently installed so I am manipulating the throttle right at the engine. Yesterday I got the engine to crank. Then I primed the new filter and the one on the engine with an electric pump I ran the pump until the fuel coming out of the filters had no air. Next I cranked the engine with the fuel injector lines loose at the injector. It took a few seconds then fuel started bubbling out of the top. A few more seconds and no more bubbles, a steady amount of fuel coming out of the top of the injectors. I tightened the lines and within a couple seconds of cranking the engine fired. It took a few tries to get it to stay running, but eventually it did. Then I tried to rev the engine a little and it died. This happened a couple times but it would start right back up. The last time it ran I kept it at idle for 2 or 3 minutes, and I could manipulate the RPM slightly. My hand slipped off the throttle at one point, the engine started sputtering but I couldn’t get it to start back up after that.

I tried bleeding the injectors again and got nothing out of #1 and bubbly fuel out of #2.

I know diesel engines well enough to work on them, but I‘m not an expert here. Gasoline engines on the other hand I am very good with. I did run into an issue ones on a gas engine where a ruptured diaphragm in a fuel pump wouldn’t supply the carb with enough fuel to run the engine under any loads. Basically you could go 20mph tops in the truck, and forget about any hills you couldn’t idle up. this seems like it could be a possibility here, where a leaky diaphragm is allowing air into the lines. But to be honest I’m not even sure this is a diaphragm type pump, it could be an impeller style. And if that’s the case I’m pretty sure my impeller is shot from sitting 15 years.

Well air in the fuel was the issue. I rebled the system today, i used the electric pump i have and it got more air out of the injection pump, and then i went to the injectors and got more air out of them too. I started the engine with the electric pump hooked up and the engine fired right up, quickly no issues, and i even had good throttle response right away, cold engine. Now i know where the throttle positions are so good there now. I put the engines fuel pump back into play and bled the system again and it started with full throttle control once again. So it wasnt a fuel pump that was my issue but air that found its way into things. But i did notice better throttle response with the electric pump over the OEM pump.
