universal 5411 exhaust

could anyone sugest where i could buy an exhaust pipe(one foot elbowed pipe from engine to exhaustsystem)for a univeral 5411? boat is located on longboat key and i need to replace this part. also, does anyone in the area know a good mechanic for the job? thankslee

Most autopart stores sell small lengths of flex exhaust tubing in various diameters, measure what you need, cut it to length with a hacksaw, bend to fit and install it with 2 exhaust clamps. You can do it Lee!!!

More to it than that...

your exhaust elbow has a mixing tee that your raw cooling water runs into the exhaust and cools/muffles it in the Aqualift muffler (directly below your pipe). These exhaust fittings are kown for needing replacement as that warm raw water does a number on the metal. Mine is in need of replacement as well. Hopefully someone has more info. Just wanted you to know it involved more than a simple pipe.

Take old one off and taqke it to a exhaust muffler shop.they should beable to bend pipe and weld the flanges very easily,as well as cut in and weld the water inlet portion

5411 exhaust

This is the skinny: The pipe is, if I remember correctly, one-and-a-quarter inch black iron, and is assembled using common sizes of elbows and threaded nipples, available at pretty much any hardware store. If you can reuse the manifold and the piece of brass pipe that has the water injection tube, it's pretty simple to take the black iron pieces to the store and match them up. Reassemble loosely, put in place, tighten where you can, use some exhaust bandage tape if you need it on the connections that couldn't be tightened fully, and you're done. The insulating wrap is nice, but not strictly necessary, since it tends to hide corrosion. The pipe doesn't get all that hot. Don't buy it from Catalina Direct, you'll pay a hundred bucks for ten dollars worth of pipe and it won't fit any better than you can do.

That's exactly what I used. When I bought the boat, the exhaust pipe was literally in pieces, help together only by the wrapping. It leaked exhaust fumes. I took it apart and matched the pieces with black pipe from the local hardware store. They even matched the "standard" lengths! Go figure!!! Put it all back together, wrapped it with automotive exhaust wrap, painted it with hi temp paint to offer some protection, put it back on the engine (it even fit on the FIRST attempt) and off we went! It's been 3 years and I'll tear it apart to check in 2 more years. No leaks, no burns, saved a ton of money by DIY.

Black Pipe Does 'Rot'

We were on our way up Buzzards Bay to the Cape Cod Canal when the cabin started filling with smoke. The black pipe exhaust and broken through. We did get to a good ($80/hour) mechanic at the closest port, and several hundred dollars later were on our way. The ol' 5411 sure runs better now, too.So check those pipes! Wish I had.
