Columbine's starter won't spin the engine for a start, even with full voltage at the starter from new batteries and shore power battery charger functioning. The engine will spin with the the decompression on, but it will stop as soon as the lever is released. The engine ground and so forth have all been checked and cleaned. If the starter is the suspect problem, does anyone have a fairly simple method for removing the starter? Thanks! Chuck

It sounds to me like the started isn't getting sufficient electrictiy. It spins with the decompression lever activated. Indicates the starter works and the circuit is complete. However it does not have the power to crank the engine. Is the starter getting 12v? What is the voltage drop when the starter is engaged? You mentioned new batteries. Are you sure the terminals are on tight? What is the condition of the cables, any corrosion evident at the terminals? I would check the power supply first. If it checks ok, then pull the starter. Disconnect the batteries. I think it is 2 wires to the starter, one big one smaller and 2 mount bolts that need to be removed. I don't know about access on a C30.

Chuck: Hopefully, your problem will not be like mine but it sure sounds like it. My starter problem started shortly after I bought the boat. My starter for my 25XP would start the engine about 2 out of 10 times. It was very frustrating. The remainder of times it would not turn the engine over. I replaced all batt cables, cleaned the grounds and even had the starter rebuilt. All batts (3) were replaced. I set up the batt system so I could use all 3 at the same time but even that didnot work most of the time. I had that starter in and out so many times I could do it blind folded. After about 3 months of fooling with this problem I finally discovered the previous owner had installed a 2 cylinder starter instead of a 3 cylinder. They bolt up the same but the 3 cylinder starter is much bigger. The ehgine access can be greatly improved by merely removing the plywood panel the sink cabinet sits on. I modified it so I could slip it in and out.

Gents, thanks for the replys. The starter is the original one on this 1988 C-30. We will go back to checking circuits and the starter voltage. A family diesel mechanic has been enlisted to help. Chuck
