Universal 25 Diesel water in motor from water pump

I have a 1986 Catalina 34 with a Universal 25 Diesel. To run the engine on land I hooked up a garden hose w/city water presure to the pickup side of the water pump. The cylinders filled up with water and hydro locked. I was able to get the water out of the cylinders and changed the oil. I then ran non-tox anti freeze through the engine to winterize. Some of the anti-freeze appeared to get into the oil, the oil level went up. I then changed the oil again. The enclosed cooling system anti-freeze level did not change. I am just getting fresh water(at this point) into the engine. Could the seal on the back of the water pump where the shaft goes into the engine be the problem? The engine runs fine. I did not appear to have a problem prior to hooking up the garden hose on city water presure.

pull the water pump

Jay, the high pressure may have damaged the seal behind the water pump and caused the water and oil to mix. Pull the WP and check the seal. This is very easy to do. Tim R.

Portland Yacht Services...

Portland Yacht Services or Hansen Marine can get you a rebuild kit for that water pump. You may have also filled your muffler so be sure to drain that before you crank the engine! WARNING! DO NOT connect a garden hose directly to your engine EVER. Instructions: 1) Buy a length of hose about 8 feet long in the same diameter as your pump strainer's hose barb, the cheap hose from Home Depot is fine, but make sure it can reach from your strainer to the cockpit. 2) Disconnect the hose between the through hull and the strainer and replace with the long hose you bought for winterizing. 3) Feed the garden hose and the engine intake hose (the new long one) into a five gallon bucket in the cockpit but DO NOT connect them together. 4) Turn on the garden hose and fill the bucket. 5) Start the engine and run fresh water, from the bucket/mini freshwater ocean, through the engine to clear the salt, 10 to 15 minutes is fine. 6)) Empty bucket and fill it with about three gallons of antifreeze. 7) Re-start engine and let the pump suck the bucket of anti-freeze through the engine. 6) Remove long hose and re-install the through hull to strainer hose with the hose clamps so when you splash in the spring you don't sink! 8) Remove the impeller they don't like anti-freeze..
