I'm about to remove the Universal 12-2 diesel from my '88 Pearson 27 because the boat has never been cared for and has been out of the water for 9 years. I just want to clean the bilges, paint the engine, fix the nastiness and put the engine back. The engine mounting bolts are machine screws (not lags) that go down through the rails on the molded liner to who knows where. I wonder if anyone knows what my risk is at just unscrewing these bolts. Will I hear a "klunk" as a threaded backing plate drops into the area behind the liner and can't be reached, or do you think they actually glassed-in a backing plate or nuts to prevent such a scenario? I just can't tell if the engine mounts were installed before or after the liner was installed. I'd rather not remove the engine by lifting it off the mounts as that would be more difficult and poses problems at getting the engine free of the companionway.
