Unique Sail One-Upmanship ... Me First "Blue-Dot-Pox"

Anybody put creative juices into doing a special look for the most visible part of your boat when out on the water?

How about posting pictures of your unique sail design graphics. Or pictures you might have in your files of someone else's whacky sail art that you might have seen.

Here' mine. A case of the "Blue Dot Pox" the sail has got. Granted the sail isn't the greatest performance wise and it's Sunbrella UV protector is on its last few seasons. (Reasons why I didn't have any reservation about going at it for 20 minutes with a couple of cans of spray paint.)

The sail got few second looks when we were out sailing today.

I think it looks great pal, very original thinking.
Maybe you want to come up with different designs and pitch them to the sunbrella manufactures (hopfully for a price).

Jibes: While I have abilities - being artistic is a stretch. Occasionally a spark of creativity emerges however. (But never the kind that would earn me $'s!)

Basically, the Sunbrella UV cover on the sale is/was the standard Pacific Blue (medium bright blue) color that every 4th or so boat in a marina seems to have. The sail was second/third hand and the bright blue didn't match my otherwise green and black color scheme. First I thought just to wisp over the blue Sunbrella with black spray paint, taking care to avoid over-spray onto the white sail fabric. But as I was about ready to start, I noticed the plastic lid that covered a five gallon pail of swimming pool chlorine tablets that I store in my garage. That and another couple of different plastic lid diameters served as great stencils for the dots ... which as you see in the photo remain the original sunbrella blue. I am sure that the black spray paint will degrade in a year or two. But fun until then.

Are you concerned that the black paint will start flaking and get all over the boat? I have to admit I never heard of anyone spray painting a sail before, what kind of paint did you use?

Wondering what I could use my scrap Sunbrella pieces for, I did my own jib sun panel with three different shades of green, each about 2 feet in height. Otherwise, Sea Grass green is my Beneteau boat's canvas color.

Jibes:

The spray paint is only wisped on. More like a surface dye that penetrates not far into the Sunbrella fibers. Not thick enough to flake or even make the Sunbrella stiff. I expect that the coating will oxidize within a few years; get chalky. But hopefully the dust will be inert and shouldn't stain anything. For instance, the iron portions of my outdoor benches at home need spray painting every few years. But in between re-coats, the oxidized chalk dust doesn't stain the decking on which the benches rest.

Now that's a creative use of project remnants that others would have just thrown away! Bet effect of the variation in green's along the leach looks great.

Thanks. A couple years ago I took my duffel of scraps and my Sailrite machine on my 3-week vacation to the beach. Oh, what to make??? I made tote bags, each out of one piece of scrap. Used grommets and rope for handles. THIRTY FIVE bags later....

This made me look and find that the only picture i have does not show the difference in the colors. I'll take one today.
