Hello All Sailors,
Looking for advice how to free electric Simpson Lawrence (SL) windlass to operate normal up/down switches. I think its a Sprint Atlantic version installed on my 2006 Hunter 38. It just started to click last weekend when either up or down button is pushed and responds with a clicking sound only. That tells me it is getting power. Is there a trick to free loose here? Trying to avoid position of complete removal to find problem or have to replace. If anyone has experience solving this problem I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks,
David

Pull the motor cover off and inspect the electric connections. I will guess that you will find corrosion, possibly a compromised weather seal. With the cover off, tap on the motor with a wrench and see if it will run.

This is just a thought- on my S-L windlass which is an Anchorman model, there is a lever that rotates to lock the capstan. I have had a couple of occasions where the lever got hit and flipped to the lock position. Attempts to run the windlass would present with the same symptom as you.
Also, S-L used French-made Leroy-Somier motors back in the mid 90's. They were crap. The brushes failed and if that is your issue that would also present as "clicking" of the solenoid with no movement. Tapping on the motor with a screwdriver handle or a 2x4 could jar the brushes to make contact. That could confirm the problem to be brushes.

If you're lucky, it may just be the controller or solenoids. You need to get to the controller box and clean-it out. Hopefully it's just corrosion.
