Under Galley Thru Hull?

Hello, I recently bought a 1979 Oday 25 and noticed a valve under the galley sink that the ice box is connected to. Is that a thru hull? If it is a thru hull does anybody know if that is above or below the waterline? Also should I should keep that closed or open most of the time? Thanks! Jay

Should be!

Yes, normally the icebox and sink drained to a skin fitting below the sink. On my 1978 25' there was no valve, so if the hose came off, the boat could potentially sink as, yes, it is below the waterline. Check the condition of the valve and thru-hull, you may need to replace. I replaced both the thru hull and installed a valve. Good luck.

Thru hull location

Thanks for the info. When I had the boat on the trailer i didnt notice the location of the skin fitting. I guess thats why I was surprised when I saw it. Is this fitting located somewhere inside of the area where the swing keel is? Could be that its painted over also.

Behind & to starboard

The thru hull was located about 12" behind the rear of the keel and about 4" to starboard as I recall. Unless you bent down and looked up while it was on the trailer, it's very hard to spot! Hope this helps.

Yes and Yes

That is a valve and thru-hull under your sink. We have the same setup on my 77' Oday 25. And it is below the waterline, so you should inspect it carefully when ever you have it out of the water. I'll probably be replacing mine next time I'm out.

sink drain, icebox

Glad this topic came up for I was just wondering what to do about that drain. There is not a shut off on mine, so is it my understanding I should install a thru hull fitting?? I do have some bungs taped to the wall to insert in case of emerg. Is it difficult to install a thru hull shut off? Thanks

Replace it

I have a 82 O'day 25 and had the same question you have. I decided to replace mine because of its importants! The valve was like a water tape valve and when I unscrewed it from the through hull fitting it was only on by 1 or 2 threads. If someone had hit it the valve would have broken off and you can guess the rest. I would recommend you change every thing !!!!

Thru Hull

Hi Ed, I have a floor liner in my cupboard under the sink. How difficult is it to remove the thru hull? Do you remove it from the outside and is there a ring on the inside? Your expertise is greatly appreciated. Robert

Tell you what I'd do....

76 O25 I think next bottom job, I'll fiberglass over this thru hull and make a new one just above waterline like the thru hull for the head sink. Then my galley sink and cooler will drain like it's should. But, more importantly, if the ball valve, thru hull, or hose clamp fails, my boat won't sink. I've worried about this since I've owned mine. Bad design I think.
