Un-bonded forward starboard bulkhead

Hello all, the forward starboard bulkhead on my '84 H31 is separated from the hull liner by about .25", making it impossible to latch the door separating the vee-berth from the salon. I think that the bulkhead should be snugged to the liner and bonded with fiberglass, to act as a structural member with the hull. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks, Guy

Bulkhead separation

I have heard of that problem on more than one of that model. You might want to contact Hunter or get someone with experience to advise you.

Mine too

Yes the bulkhead on my '86 H31 has done the same thing. I thought it was the torture I'd put her through racing. My head door hits the V birth bulkhead by about at least 1/2". I tried to push it back but to no avail. Any suggestions?

Compression Post ?

Could your compression post be causing your problem? H31,including mine, have been prone to compression post rot. This can cause the head ceiling to sag, thus putting both blukheads and the door out of square. Bob

I don't think so

good idea Bob, although I have not taken its covers apart, the compression post seems fine - the overall shape of the deck is fine, no signs of leakage, and properly sealed fittings at the mast step. I'll have a second look as soon as things thaw out up here. Thanks

I think there is a small space in mine!

Guy: I think that there is a very small gap in mine. This bulkhead may provide only minimal support. The primary support is in the compression post and the bulkhead that seperates the head and the main salon. I suppose that you door closes fine for the head but does not close on the v-berth correctly? Can you see any movement on the headliner or the sole area? Has this always been this way or did this just happen recently?

Bonding to hull

The answer to your original question is: yes, bulkheads should be bonded with fiberglass to act as a structural member of the hull. Unfortunately, this costs money that Hunter doesn't want to spend. To get that kind of quality and structural integrity, you need to find a different brand of boat. (And pay more money.) It's all about tradeoffs.

Found the original litterature

I found the original Hunter brochure where I had seen the fiberglass bonding - it is there. This may just be meant to keep the liner in place and does not mean that it is structural, but I think I'll get the hammer or a spreader out before launch and put the liner in its place and bond it there. In response to Steve: the door behaves just like you describe. The boat was like that when I purchased it a year ago. Thanks for the help, Guy

Yes, it's unbonded

I took that plywood bulkhead off several weeks ago as I prepare to make some compression post/cross member repairs. Yes, it is true that bulkhead is not bonded to the hull in any way. Mine will be tabbed into the boat when I re-install that panel. It was another "shortcut" taken during production.
