Soo, I had a encounter with a power boater this Saturday..Totally ruined my day.
This post is just me venting at this point!
First, at my marina, power boaters outnumber sailboats by a large margin. Most of my neighbors on my dock are great people, friendly, courteous, conscientious boaters. We get along great. My rant directed at 1 particular power boater... not all power boaters!

So had a great day sail and was. returning to marina. I was under head-sail alone running downwind. approaching the outside of the marina breakwater.
The breakwater consists of several (4) large barges strung together end to end.
There is a gas dock near the north entrance to marina. (where I'm headed) Then this long break-wall and then a south entrance.

I'm under sail, motor running but in neutral, Starting to roll in the head sail.
I'm just passing the South entrance with those break wall barges on my starboard.
Large power boat leaves fueling dock by north entrance. going slow...
He moves out to pass me (port to port) on outside, So far all good.
(Also note,, no other boaters in the area, Lots and lots of room for him to maneuver)

Now he turns into a total jerk. As he approaches me
1) He accelerates to very fast (I'm guessing 15+ knots )
2) Comes passes by me very close under 20 feet
3) Does a U turn as he passes close behind me, passes me now on my starboard side.
4) Then he slows down, turns back around and pulls into the south entrance of the marina.
5) To top it all off, he waves at me and I hear him laughing with guests on his boat.

So he basically put me in a washing machine with his large wake on three sides of me.....
right along side the breakwater as I'm trying to furl my sail. All for no reason!
After I got back to my slip I was fuming. I seriously thought of walking the docks to find and confront him on why he acted so stupidly! I didn't, but I should have. But he totally ruined my mood after coming off a great sail.
OK done with my rant!

Frustrating, but sometimes confrontation can backfire. Maybe consider this: tell your story to the other power boaters you know and trust. Sometimes peer pressure can work in your favor. One "out there" idea is to find the a$$hole and take him for a ride in your boat while one of your friends pulls his stunt.

Otherwise, chill, nothin' fixes stupid.

Talk about timing,...my event happened yesterday. Motoring northbound ,Chesapeake Bay just outside of Baltimore, the wife yells "There's a boat coming"!! I turn around,a Grady White is coming by full throttle, passes by hard alongside and throws his wake into the cockpit, drenched us! All I could do was yell " Fu&£## &£+-#hole! Gone too fast,3 guys laughing their asses off at us. Good thing it was hot and sunny, felt good actually. Reported to cops later, nothing they can do now of course,. Oh well. I would have given a thousand dollars for a stainless steel pump gun and some slugs!!

the cadence of motor boat wakes always suck. even the wakes from the nice motor boats. you 'll have these guys. it will happen again. so me, i never ever ever let a wake upset me. i'm sailing, and i'm having fun. no wake is going to kill my buzz. :) i always call out an approaching wake so crew and guests can brace.
i believe in karma just for these situations. he'll get his somehow someday. when these situations develope i always smile and wave as though it means nothing to me. the sailing gods will make it even.

good to blow off steam here. we like you. and i notice you have a really cool boat.

let a smile be your unbrella.

Had a power boat power up right alongside- shot water into my cockpit-IN the intercoastal- problem was, it was the Coast Guard. I blasted him on VHF and his crew seemed shocked

I've wondered what would happen, in a situation like that, should a length of 3/8 nylon line suddenly leave your boat and jump in the water near the offender.

Have had similar problems with Power boat A-holes and stick up the butt Sail boaters. Seems to me it's not the type of craft, it's the Ass in control of it.
Of course that is just my opinion.

...or intoxication.
Would not recommend getting in a confrontation with an impaired boater. Pull out your smartphone and start a video record. Even drunk people lose their buzz when they realize they are creating evidence.

The admiral would have gone ballistic in that situation. I chalk it up to redneck stupidity.
We actually co-existed pretty well with the stinkpots this weekend. The reservoir is overfilled right now and forced boaters and campers into our cove. It was like spring break ...without the the bikinis :(

Wow, and we only need to deal with tides. (and of course other boaters.) To me, the bad ones are turbine tug boats with no load. They can create a 6 foot curling wake a mile behind them. No way they can see if they've broached anyone.

Nor are they worried. Most of the sound is a wake at your own risk zone. Boaters are expected to handle the waves on their own. If not the tugs, a loaded container ships doing 20 knots can produce a wake that will give most boats an interesting ride. You either learn to steer into the wake or suffer the consequences. PFD anyone?

Its not the wakes i take issue with. I can see them comming, plan for them and deal with them. On a sunny weekend. So many boats out. Wakes are unavoidable. And big ships and tugs. They are proffessionals doing their jobs.

Its the jerks (often drinking) who go out of there way to get you intentionaly... when they have big motors, miles of room.. and they choose to come in close and buzz you just because they can.

I had to look up "aphorism".:confused: That's a new word for me! In any case, I agree, stupidity fits best. It's harder to feel malice toward a stupid person. So, it follows that it's easier on the heart (less stress) to have pity rather than return malice toward the idiot.
Jon also has it right ... a smile and karma is more likely to satisfy you. "Don't let the bastards get you down"

There was a boy around here who had the fastest boat on the Chesapeake, believe it was said to do 180 mph. It was tied up to my dock so I went to take a look after he came in one day. Thing was littered with whiskey bottles and plastic cups. Liquid courage.

For us it's most often the jet skis and speed boats making wakes in the anchorages, when we are getting in or out of the dinghy, or unloading groceries. It's not like we're in an invisible boat all dressed in camo gear, either. They are just ignorant, thoughtless folks who don't know better, or couldn't care less.
However, after so many years down here its not like I don't know the foibles of each anchorage, so I really see no reason to blame those operating their equipment in each, for doing exactly what I know they'll do. If I choose to anchor where others may wake me, or I choose to operate my vessel where others may not do as I would like, then why would I let it bother me when the other operators act exactly as I knew they would?
Life is way too short to spend even a few seconds ranting about something(or let it ruin my day) as trivial a few minutes of lumpy water.
Heck, I don't suppose your twice daily commute is as peaceful and pleasant as you would like either, and that's something you must do, not a voluntary activity.

kmart, I think this is your marina at Fall River, MA? It may help to understand how dumb that guys behavior was!
upload_2017-5-30_21-43-59.png

We've experienced thoughtless behavior also from people driving big boats recklessly or purposefully. It's even worse when they roar by a kayak, row boat, or some guy fishing with grand kids in a little boat that's anchored. If you're not paying attention, you can get hurt on bigger boat. On a smaller boat, you can get hurt whether you're alerted with some notice.

Usually a call on VHF, yelling, setting off a horn, or even using a hailer, does little immediately. Big assholes seem to come with small ears. ;^))) Occasionally, someone will express contrition because they weren't paying attention -- all too rarely. I believe that more people realize that they were wrong and make a mental note not to do that again (whether they have a short memory or not). I've made VHF admonitions a practice within reason. I think that using the "perps" boat name and description in the open remarks makes it more effective. (It certainly makes me feel better.) Local law enforcement may be listening and the name can make a mental note. With slight stimulus, they can make someones life difficult with a stop, inspect, search, etc.

Legally, someone is generally responsible for one's wake -- but you have to damaged to assert a claim (then you have prove it). Of course, you don't want to really be damaged and life's to short to make retribution something other than "contemplated, but never acted upon."

I take evasive action. When I see a big wake coming or a powerboater throwing a big wake, I steer away to get room. Then I decide whether I need to head into the wake. I cannot do anything about stupid boaters. I learned to do this from days playing in dinghys on the intracoastal. Big sportfishing boats would come by, and you either took action, or you were swamped or worse! At high tide, these boats would fill swimming pools along the intracoastal!

There was this time when I was around 14, putting around the intracoastal in a dinghy, fishing, when some school acquaintances who were endowed with money but no brains came by in their nice 20ft center console and swamped me. I laughed at them and gestured them to follow me. I may have had some illegal kind of enticements on board... Anyway, I led them into about 1 1/2 ft of water whereupon their boat ran aground in mud, their engine spit mud til it died, and I motored out and waved as I passed! See ya! A-holes!
