Hi all, Just musing over the weather this morning and doing a comparison of the tropics. We’ve had plenty of rain (2-3+ inches) and wind over 40 kts with gale warnings. No name from the NWS but if was in the gulf everyone would be running to high ground. Typically, it’s nothing special and will pass unnoticed.

No they wouldn't.

What you describe is common in many places including the tropics, depending on the season.

Your post got me curious about why they name storms at all... Apparently it is for clearer communication:

FWIW: Southerners and PNW residents would likely all cower in the house if they had over 3 feet of snow, with temps of -40 and occasional blizzards. No storm names either.... They are often just called Colorado lows because the low pressure systems often form there and head NE. Pbbft to Colorado.

Then again, the near constant rain in the PNW, during winter is one reason why I only lived there for a short.time. So I am not so tough..

Those Canadians who do perfectly fine with cold and snow, still laugh about the time Toronto called in the army for a snow storm

Takes a lot more than that to get gulf coast residents attention. Typical weather with summer thunderstorms and winter cold fronts. Don’t give the NWS any more ideas, bad enough that they are naming winter storms, next they will be naming every cold front.

Of the 9 named storms so far this year, only 4 would have been named in years past. NWS seems to be helping the insurance folks by naming almost every strong thunderstorm so that the deductible goes up. The other thing that NWS seems to be doing is a thing where they predict X number of storms at the beginning and they want to make sure that that number is satisfied.. I am happy for the increased forecast accuracy that we see today but I feel that the new(er) wind speed reports and protocols are very different from the old standards (measured wind speed at 10 meters above grade IIRC) .. It is misleading to use storms as named with today's protocols in talking about and comparing numbers of storms over the years.

Just curious, Bob. I'm originally from Scituate so if you are in New Bedford, why are you going all the way to Scituate to haul out? I'm just going to assume that your boat is not in New Bedford.

We sail Buzzards Bay and slip at Pope Island in New Bedford but I live in Marshfield. I store the boat at home and Scituate is the closest location from a transportation standpoint. Buzzards Bay is a much richer sailing ground with many places within a days sail.

OK, that makes a lot of sense. I seemed to have forgotten, ( being in Fl for the last 50 years), that winter is coming up and you have to haul out. Never sailed Buzzards Bay but spent many summers at my grandparents cottage on the shore in Westport. You could see the lighthouse on Gay Head at night. I do miss the area. to you, Bob.

Everyone knows how wet it is here in western Washington.
I few weeks ago I flew down to AZ to visit my daughter in Tucson. After we got home, I commented to my wife about how nice it was to be back into the land of lush green instead of crunchy brown. Can't wait for the fall rains to begin. We have not had a single rain shower in Oak Harbor WA since the 4th of July weekend.
Tucson on the other hand is green everywhere with real water flowing in the riverbeds.

A few years ago a lot of people were caught trying to evacuate on the highways when they ran out of gas. Then finding a place of refuge was extremely difficult. It’s a difficult choice.
