Hunter 33.5 Lake Ouachita
Well the winter projects are under way. I am trying to determine the type of wood used on the interior bulkheads, cabinets, and trim of my '88' Hunter 33.5. I have read in the owners manual that it is teak. Looks like oak not really sure. Any ideas?

Thanks, John

Teak

Pretty sure Hunter used real teak back than they did change to cherry in 07 and my 2007 H-36 was one the last that they used teak before changing to cherry but some with your year boat will jump in soon.

Teak lookallike

the bulkheads are plywood. Teak plywood is VERY expensive. I've found that if you sort through the pile you can find cabinet grade oak that has a straight grain on the back side that, with the application of teak stain, is a pretty close match. You will undoubtedly encounter the "old wood is bleached out and the new wood is not" problem also so matching the new to the old with stain is also helpful.
here are the sole boards I re-did due to water damage. new is on the right over the bilge and old is on the left

Thanks Bill, I have quite a bit of teak veneer. So I have glued the veneer to a sheet of 11/32 plywood making it 15/32 which is the thickness of what I am replacing. The project is replacing the panels in the head behind the and above the head, non structural. The closeout panels were plywood covered in a cheap white vinyl type laminate. Why Hunter used this product in the head and vanity area instead of real laminate is beyond me. The cost would not have been that much more. Now with some age this vinyl laminate is cracking.

Cheers, John
