After reconditioning my 222 centerboard, I'm thinking of it's installation this spring. My pix shows how I think the assembly goes back into the shoal keel. I can't remember which end is towards the bow. Questions 1. Do I have the bow ends correct? 2 Do I need to use an adhesive-caulk to reassemble the wedges? 3 Should I coat the threads of the four screws with something holding the plates that hold the wedges up in the shoal keel? Somewhere I think on this forum, I read that it is necessary to apply caulk to the wedges in order to keep them in place.. I wasn't there / not paying attention when we removed the centerboard last fall AND I SEE NO SIGNS OF PREVIOUS CAULKING THERE.. We had a terrible time removing the SS screws holding the two plates that hold the wedges. These plates have a small center screw holding the wedges to the plates so I can't think why caulk is necessary. My friend who is a retired steamfitter and knows a lot on metals is not around now, thus the third question. Burt always talked about SS threaded components and gaulding. ( Like a corrosion) causing nuts to get frozen after time. This is the reason we had such a hard time removing the four screws for those plates. I think there is something to use on the threads to prevent this condition. Does any one have any thoughts? THANK YOU IN ADVANCE !! "RADAR"

On My 25
I have a 25 and I remove the centerboard every season to bottom paint and I don't use caulk or anything on the screws. The wedges on a O 25 have a different angle on each face so if you put it in place the wrong way you will notice that it doesn't sit in place properly.

charlyc' You can drop your centerboard as shown in your avatar? I have been using Micron plus and get 3-4 seasons on a paint job,just a little touch up each year. This year I am switching to Super Shipbottom paint as I have see this on a paint job on a boat in the fourth season on the Chesapeake Bay. It's about $70.00 less a gallon and includes shipping too. http://supershipbottom.com/ Does your hardware seem the same? My 222 is an 86' year. Thanks "Radar"

It's been all Redone
Chuck It did not look like that when I first got the boat and it was sitting in the hard for a long time. I put a lot of work besides dollars into it but I love the results. Thanks for complements it's always nice when somebody notices the effort that one puts into the boat. Yours looks in great shape and I see the chunk missing on your centerboard. I yet to pull mine down since it was stuck open when it was hauled out and had to force it close so who nows what to expect when I try to pry it out. Cheers and happy sailing

wedge installation
Hi Chuck, I pulled the centerboard from my 1979 Oday 23 last fall. The wedges, stainless steel plates, and screws all had caulk on them. The wedges were caulked on their outside face, presumably to hold them to the keel. My wedges were installed with the finished side against the keel and the angled side forward. I plan to reinstall this spring with caulk in the same places. I plan to use 4200 fast cure. I was thinking of using 101, but don't want to wait 2 weeks for it to cure. Hope this helps. the centerboard pin
Kevin, Did you happen to look up inside the keel? Wondered if the keel has a keyway for the pin? Otherwise what holds it from moving for and aft off the wedges? The new pin (in the pix) is a little longer that the old one. I supose it's made over sized to fit many boats. Can't look inside my keel as the boat is on the trailer. I did get a reply from Rudy and here it is "Hi Chuck Thanks for the order Rudy Yes you should use an underwater Caulk .Boatlife? or something Equal--Not 5200" It didn't seem that mine had any caulk on any of the parts. Wonder what the caulk does as other havn't used it? Chuck R

Hi Chuck, Unfortunately I didn't get a good look up inside the keel. When I removed the screws and pried the wedges loose it all dropped down rather suddenly. I had a couple of guys helping me and a somewhat impatient crane operator waiting, so I just picked everything up, got out of the way, and we swung the boat back in the water. I did notice that when I hauled the boat out a week or so later the keel dripped water from the screw holes for some time. I've never seen that before so at a minimum, I would caulk the screws to keep water out of the keel. If we get a nice day soon I'll go over to the boatshed and see if I can see up into the keel.
