Island Packet 37 Hull #2 Harpswell Me
A couple of photos taken recently in Maine, one was donated by Germany at the end of WW2, the other has slightly more historic interest. Clue= Admiral Perry.

The first is the Bowdoin. Sailed the arctic.

The second is the Eagle. I had two of its crew aboard last night.

I was on-board the Bowdoin three weeks ago at our clubs dock party. Very, very cool to be on a boat that has been to the poles 23 times.... She is built like the proverbial Brick $hit House..... MMA still uses her for training...

I spent 3 years in Castine and never went for a sail on the Bowdoin, my date/fate was always the TSSOM. The wife and I plan to remedy that this fall as they do a couple of short trips during homecoming.

We were too busy running lines and hoses through bilges and breaking tools to notice the ships as they went by. However we did notice an unusual computer network while logging on with our laptop. Oh well.

The Bowdoin was in Stovers Beach in Harpswell for the night, we were anchored there for the first night of our down east cruise. Tim R is correct but failed to mention that Admiral Peary was the first person to the North Pole in 1909 and it was the Bowdoin that took him there. He owned Eagle Island in Casco Bay and his home can still be visited in the summer.

He also brought back a huge meteorite from the North pole region. Nice home with a three-sided fireplace, player piano, and many artifacts.

Peary's Place

We were amazed at how pretty the old place is. Susan and I were lucky to have sailed by a couple of years ago .. courtesy of the kindness of one of the forum members.. We had a fine time around Portland enjoying the history and seeing lots of neat boats..

Have to correct my post. The Bowdoin did not take Peary to the arttic, that was the Roosevelt, the Bowdoin was built in 1920, 11 years after Peary made it to 90 North
