Two Challengers

Here's a photo of Daphne and Whisper, both with green hulls, together in Tiverton. Daphne has shed her mizzen, but she still has chain plates. There are interesting small differences in the finishing of the boats: Whisper has a more rounded cabin top with a transition to the wood cabinsides a bit lower. Same boat, different flavors, both excellent!

A nice comparison. I see the subtle differences from builder to builder but have not noticed that. Where was each boat finished?

These are the two boats, from Ian's list (thanks again, Ian!)

949F/1960/Yawl/Halmatic[#?]/Molich[#?]/Highlight/Sinsonte/Arianna/Innisfree/DAPHNE/Tiverton,RI
949LL/1962/Yawl/Halmatic[#1113]/Palmer Johnson[#?]/Kuwi/WHISPER/Quissett,MA

There were only three Palmer Johnson Challengers. I would love to see the others to see how similar they are. Does anyone know anything more about these two?

949P/1960/Yawl/Halmatic[#?]/Palmer Johnson[#?]/VICTORY/Harbor Springs,MI
949AA/1961/Yawl/Halmatic[#?]/Palmer Johnson[#?]/Peleia/Barbara(Tristan Jones?)/Reverie*/orig.Naperville,IL)

It's interesting that the lower transition from cabintop to wooden cabinsides makes the cabin look lower and perhaps longer. The inside of the cabin also has a bit of an arch to it.

I should have looked. I have some old listings of Challengers which I will get my hands on. One as I recall was REVERIE. A broker friend gave me copies of all Challengers they had dealt with, several. There could be some info in those listings for Iains list.

K Aage Nielsen the boat designer was credited in his book in refining this very detail. He nicely lowered the look of the boat visually with this corner detail along the cabin top. And then Paul Luke who built many of his boats, may have refined it a tad as well. A Challenger builder could have easily done the same.

My boat, Molich finished has a fairly large radius but not to this degree above.

I see it on many boats he's designed that are in our harbor. Here's a close up of the detail, carried out fully, on one of his designs. SAYONARA is just a beauty of a boat.

Here is my Molich finished Challenger close up. Quite a bit sharper than your boat or the Nielsen. Do you have a close up of your boats cabin top?
