Here's another question from this potential 26 owner (and it shows my lack of knowledge with this boat): why does it need two batteries? What type of batteries are needed? Are they rechargeable by shore power?
Typically 2 batteries are used so that one can be held in reserve for starting the engine. Also 2 batteries of a certain capacity weigh less (individually) than one battery of the same capacity. No matter what they still weigh a lot & it helps to divide up the weight. Any battery(ies) are rechargable by shore power w/ the proper charger or on board w/ a generator. Look for the book "12 volt bible for boats". It will explain a lot. There are many other book & articles on the subject too.
John, Certainly the most important function for the battery is starting the engine, but you'll notice that all the other electrical items on the boat are probably wired for 12v as well and if you're using your boat as a camper, away from a power supply, you'll be surprised how fast that battery will get drained. The 2nd is just for added capacity.
Thanks for the info. I forgot to include that the engine is an outboard with pull start, which is why I was confused about the need for two batteries. The boat does not have a battery charger either. I checked online and it seems that it's easy enough to install one. Thoughts? I'll pick up that 12-volt bible for boats, too.
