All I can think is that you're misreading our nifty turnbuckle-tightening technique, which is done in two stages, to improve mechanical advantage and reduce torque on the turnbuckle barrel. If that's the problem, let's see if I can help: Put a wrench on the turnbuckle barrel and tighten it 1/2 turn (this usually means counterclockwise). You have now tightened the lower thread and twisted the wire 1/2 turn. Now hold the turnbuckle barrel in place, put another wrench on the wire terminal, and twist it clockwise until it is back to where it started. Repeat, always returning the wire end to its starting position. This process affects one screw at a time, meaning you can make the stay twice as tight for the same effort. Clear?
