It is all about being effective -- not ineffective

I have a P-31, fractional rig. In my first two years of racing GOOD TRADE, my results were across the board, from first place to DFL by three or four hours after 50 miles. Last season I did much better, scoring several first, placing in nearly every race, and consistently beating boats that were always just ahead of me in past years.
Much of my success I attribute to Don and advice he gave me. With that said, I am not sure that there is much I can say about "twist" because I do not understand the meaning of it. However, reagding higher winds, heel, and effectively moving your boat, I will offer what I was told:
As you start sailing in lighter wind, you need a very efficient sail shape to move your boat. Think of a big, thick, fat, very round wing on a cargo plane (and ignore any supercritical design stuff for the moment). It works very efficiently at lower speeds and generates power to move your boat. But, efficient wings are a broblem as the wind picks up.
And so the wind blows harder and suddenly, your boat is heeling over. For the racer d ude in you, you think this is cool. For your passenger, it is scary. And probably neither of you notice, for your rudder and tiller, you have created a lot more work. Because your wing is too efficient for the wind load, it is trying to turn the boat up, you counter by adding rudder, and now create drag. The fact is, by having an an efficient-in-low-wind wing, you have a too-efficient-in-higher-winds wing, and you are left healing over, dragging your rudder, and going slower than you can, even as the excitement makes you think you are going fast. So, on solution is to let out the main. That will, in effect, give you less effective sail area (and taken to an extreme, your whole main will be left flogging), but you will be sailing upright, and you won't be dragging your rudder sideways through the water. Think about that for a moment, what has more resistance, your main as it flaps in the wind or your rudder as it drags sideways?
On a fractional rig, in higher winds you can bend the mast by adjusting the backstay. This pushes the center of the mast forward, pulling the sail tighter in the middle, and flattens it out. Now, the formerly fat cargoe aircraft wing becomes more fighter like. It is actually less efficient, but more effective for higher winds. Less efficient in that it does not convert as much wind into boat energy, but more effective as it provides power without overpowering your boat.
I noticed the difference last October in a 35 MPH day with my 90% jib and bent mast, we never got luffed up but placed 1st in a local frostbite rase, and in November beat a boat that had consistent spanked me whenever I went further up-river to race.
But that is for fractionally rigged boats. Mast head rigs can't bend their mast -- DON"T TRY -- YOU CAN BEND YOUR BOAT TRYING -- so I guess that is why they talk about "twist." And as I said at the top, I cannot say much about "twist" because I do not understand the meaning of it.
