Probably a question that is stupid, but since I'm not the electronics guru of this household..... Cable TV at the slip is horribly expensive. I'm already a satellite TV customer at home, why can't another 'dish' be added to my boat, or on my dock storage box, so that I can receive decent TV. I realize while moving, thats not going to work, it would need to constantly track its satellite, but is just the bobbing of a boat enough to totally screw up reception?? I certainly am not ready for the 3OOO + TRACK TV

You can buy a lot of books for 3000 clams!

Besides, watching TV while at anchor is a federal offense punishable by death especially if anyone can hear it tuned into Survivor! ;-) Only stinkpotters are allowed this luxury.

A friend of minea

added a box to his home Dish network setup. Think it cost him like 5 bucks a month for the extra box. He then took the box to his boat. Did have to come up with an antenna, but that shouldn't be too hard. Mounted the antenna to a dock piling. VOIOLA Quality TV reception for 5 bucks a month. I might add, this is perfectly legal as far as I can tell. If you have the service, and add a box, there is nothing that says where you have to use said box.

SLING BOX!!!!!

Have you ever heard of Slingbox? It attaches to your TV and internet at home and you can pick it up over the net...Yes, that's right, see and control your own TV from your computer. Go to Sling Media and check it out. Now all you need is a WiFi connection or a wireless internet connection on your boat to watch your home TV! I use it on my mobile phone when I travel and in the hotel rooms as well. I don't even mind a little lay over as long as I can get comfortable and watch my own TV and DVR. Oh Yea! Control you DVR or Tivo with it too. Good luck, Lou

Mount on dock

If you mount the dish on the dock you won't have a movement issue, just run the cable to the boat.

Why do you have such a strong urge to turn your salon into a replica of your TV room at home? Do you have an aversion to: 1. watching nature in all it's boundless glory 2. reading a good book 3. socializing with friends 4. listening to good music 5. planning your next voyage with your family 6. playing a board game with your children or spouse 7. just plain talking...... Given the horrors of the world, escaping from all that misery, mindless drivel and consumerism is important to this sailor. Virtually no TV is 'decent' today. BTW, I like the name of your boat. why is a boat so different Pete?

so as to only allow you to do these things "1. watching nature in all it's boundless glory 2. reading a good book 3. socializing with friends 4. listening to good music 5. planning your next voyage with your family 6. playing a board game with your children or spouse 7. just plain talking......" aboard a boat? Assuming most people do the above at home and not to the exclusion of owning a TV, what changed?

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Laptop

I have thrown a DVD on the lap top and watched it. That being said, it is a rare thing. I don't miss TV when I am on the boat. It just doesn't feel right having one on there.

William, we don't watch commercials.

Haven't sat through more than one or two a week at home. DVR! Ours is from Dish. We have two of them. One drives the home theater and the other is in the bedroom. Both have UHF remotes for each receiver for the second tuner to work in a remote location but we don't use them that way. Instead we use the second tuner to delay desired programs while we watch delayed stuff, like the news, on the other tuner. Zapping a commercial takes just a finger-touch. We have yet to watch a political ad! And for $5.00 more a month we can do the same to the boat. Hmmmm And William, GREAT CREW!

I wouldn't even consider one...

My boat is my refuge, I go to it to get away from TV, the computer, email and the like. We just bounced back from an 8 day sailing trip to the keys and went without tv for the entire time. I will admit, we did have a portable dvd player with Master and Commander, Capt. Ron. I wouldn't have a tv unless I lived aboard.

Oh, please....

"A sailboat is a sacred place, I will not comment of the moral implications of your actions." Good grief, the guy is interested in a tv for his boat. Maybe his SO or kids want it to further enjoy the experience. Some of you guys are a hoot.

Just finished setting up the satelite dish

At the dock today so my 5 year old can watch her favorite tv programs while the in the marina and her father can listen and or watch the Yankees while I'm there We spend a lot of time at the boat during the summer on weekends and would like to spend even more time during the week so having all the creature comforts that I have at home maybe the kids will spend more time on the boat I tried to install a plain ol boat antenna last year and that was a waste of time and the reception sucked When I leave the dock (most weeekends)there's no tv and thats ok with me and every one else.

TV aboard docked boat.

Nautiduck, you hit the nail on the head. My husband and I 'baby-sit' our 8yr old granddaughter very often. Usually she stays with us over weekends. She loves nature, fishing, etc, but in the evenings she doesn't want to 'visit ' the neighbors like we do. Also, there are rainy days here in SC. The boat is my haven away from home. I don't regularly watch TV at home, therefore I don't need it on the boat, but husband and GD do.

12v TV

Since we are talking TVs, anyone have a recommendation for a 12v flat screen? Thanks Chris

Missing the whole point!

I always think that people who need to watch TV on the boat are missing the whole point of being on a boat! But then I feel that Television is a total waste wherever one might be.
