TV reception on Hunter 36

We have a 2-year-old Hunter 36 and discovered in June that our Sole TV (installed by manufacturer) is NOT a digital. The word "digital" appeared in the manual, so we were quite surprised when the reception quit. It's never had a great picture anyway. Colors have always been "kerflooey."

It seems that the federal government did not require Hunter to install digital TVs at the time our boat was delivered--although everyone had been talking about the conversion to digital for years. We are hoping that Hunter will resolve this problem as I write this.

But has anyone found a quality 12-volt TV that is reliable in a marine environment?

Sounds like you may have misplaced the responsibility here on Hunter. Regardless, why replace an otherwise new TV? Just buy a converter box for $40 and the issue is gone.

Wow! How could you expect Hunter to go back two years? I just heard about digital vs analog last year by reading about it and then seeing television commercials. Was it really advertised that long ago? I don't see how you could hold Hunter liable for that but a brand new boat being built now for sure.

If Hunter said "digital," I'd hold them to it. Converter box performance is spotty, in my experience. It's all a conspiracy to get us all to buy cable -- hard to do afloat

The converter box is simply a tuner similar, if not better than the one in the TV. If you have poor reception, it's all about the antenna height and location, neither of which is Hunter's responsibility.
A friend just bought a new Searay and still needed a converter for his 2009 boat and TV. Digital-ready and digital are mutually exclusive things.

Converter Box

We have a Hunter 36 with a sharp TV that came from Hunter. We also have friends who have a Hunter 45 with a sole TV that came from Hunter. Both of our TVs are LCD flat panel TVs that are mounted. I discovered in June that both of these TVs were not digital and could get no reception. I opted for a digital converter box for our boat because of the problem of with installation of another TV. This worked fine and it fit in the shelf close to the TV. The picture (with a new digital antenna) is great. It looks lake cablevision HD. The cost was minimal and the installation is easy. You use the remote for the box. WE acquired ours at RAdio Shack.

Digital

Digital is a misused word today.
TVs have been digital for 20 years...at least lots of guts.
As for the digital transmission of signals ATSC, that finally occurred this year. It was originally planned many years ago and delayed and delayed for many political reasons. Regular old TVs still work on cable, satellite, etc. but they can no longer receive broadcast TV.

I have a Axiom 17" Widescreen Digital LCD TV with DVD player. However, it does not have an ATSC tuner therefore it can't receive "digital" broadcast. I wired it to run on DC power using a DC/DC converter so I don't have to run my generator to watch TV.

I used one of my 2 "coupons" that all Americans could get to purchase ($0) a converter. I keep that on the boat as well as a DirecTV receiver (when at the dock)

My TV model isn't made any more but there are plenty of semi-low-power LCD TVs to purchase. If buying a new one, I would make sure it has the ATSC tuner just to get the number of gadgets on the boat to a minimum.
