Turnbuckle/Furler problem

I have an older H30 with the old style swaged turnbuckle which is .7" at its widest point. I just bought a #7 CDI furler and found that the hole in the extrusion is only .5". I have thought about grinding down to size or cutting the turnbuckle at its narrowest point and threading it so that I can attach a newer / narrower turnbuckle to it. My last resort would be to take down the forestay and have a rigger make me a new one. - The problem is finding a rigger who has the time to do it. Any help, as always is appreciated. These forums and the people who contribute are great.

May be an indication.....

Joe: This may be an indication that you have a furler that is slightly undersized for your rig. I was just at the Pacific Sail Expo and asked a fellow from an outfit that ONLY sells rigging stuff. What are the best of the furlers. He sold most of the major brands including the one you purchased. He did not recommend this furler for a 30+ ft boat. He had Schafer, Harken, Profurl and said that these furlers where good for 15 years. They are also a repair center for the equipment that they sell. I am not telling you that there is anything wrong with the unit that you bought but this is just something to think about.

Just installed the same furler on my H30

I just put the CDI #7 on my 1979 H30. I did hire a rigger, mainly because of the problems getting the old furler off. Turns out there was a kink in the headstay, so I had a new one made, another $100. If you have a 1/4" dia. headstay, you do have the correct unit, but if it's any larger, you need the #9 model. I suppose you'll have to have a new headstay made so the stud will fit through the hole, and find a climber/rigger to install it. I wouldn't monkey around with grinding such a critical structural part. Mine has a 1/2" stud and turnbuckle and fit easily thru the center hole. If I can help further, email me at jthomasx2@yahoo.com BTW, the CDI works beautifully, exceeding my expectations!
