I think we need a bit more info here. What was the wind blowing at? Were you reefed? If you were doing 16 knots you were surfing down-wind -- always a dangerous situation.

The mast shouldn't break
Those of us that also sail small cats smack our masts into the water all the time. In fact if you don't, you're not going fast enough! I've hit the mast against the water at high speed a hundred times and never broken one yet. I'd say you had a weak spot or perhaps the shrouds were not adjusted correctly.

I'm not familiar w/Hunter 146 but if I rolled any monohull cabin sailboat of any size, the last of my worries would be a broken mast! Does the 146 stand for 14-1/2 ft? If yes, then Rock'n Roll!

One other possibilty I did not mention. what was the depth of the water. If shallow and you hit the bottom, yes the mast can break as well.
