I have been lurking on this site for some time, and actually registered so I could reply to your post.
My wife & I have chartered in Turkey 5 times. We have also gone four times for RYA classes. We sail out of Marmaris. Netsel Marina is really nice; Moorings, and a number of other charter companies are represented.
A lot depends on your charter period (1 week vs. 2) but we have negotiated 8-10 days when our schedules require it.
Most people head East from Marmaris to the "Skopea Limani, Gocek, and Fethiye. Google/Google Earth them. In the SL there are a huge number of coves, most of which have a single restaurant. In Gocek, Fet., there are nice marinas. We usually spend our last night in Eckincik, which is half way b/w Marmaris and the SL. Very nice restaurant, with a newish marina below.
There is also an option to go westerly out of Marmaris, and the geogrpahy is 100% different than the East route. Nonetheless, there are also some great places to sail.
Flights arrive in Dalman-then it is a bus/taxi ride to Marmaris. Not a short run (1.5 hrs?) but if you pick up a charter in Gocek, it is approximately 20-30 mins. from the airport.
Another option (we have not done it) is to hire a one way charter, and head from Bodrum to Marmaris/Gocek. The obvioous advantage is you are not covering the same area, and the added bonus is you are running with the prevailing Meltemi winds. If you have sailed Croatia, you are familiar with them; calm in the a.m., growing in the p.m., and dying (hopefully) in the evening. They can, however, be quite strong for several days.
September is a great time to be there, as the crowds start to thin. Still busy, but lots of space.
