Tuning the Rig

Hey Guys and Gals: I suspect that my shrouds need tuning. I was all for learning how to do this myself until I happened upon a sailor at a neighboring marina. She just had her boat repaired because a rigger tightened her shrouds too tight and "collasped the deck." Needless to say my enthusiasm for doing this myself has similarly collapsed. Is this a really difficult task or was the rigger just unbelievably ignorant? Melody

a little tricky, but...

Like anything else, a little knowledge is helpful. Hunters are a little different, and each boat is different so its too complicated to get into here. I would suggest Brion Toss' video and website for starters to study up on the subject. Or you could pay a reputable rigger to tune while you watched and learned.

What the rigger did

Hi Melody, Think a professional rigger would have used a tool to set the tension in the stays / shrouds. If that's true - then the collasped deck was due failure of the mast supports between the base of the mast and the keel or other internal support used. The rigger found a problem and hard to believe was the problem. Get a tension tool - follow simple directions to set tension. Good Luck,

What Type Rig Do You Have?

What type of rig do you have? "Standard" type with the spreaders perpendicular to the centerline, swept-back spreaders, or B&R rig? Also, knowing the make, model, and year of the boat might be helpful to provide a better answer.

Not hard, but might be a good chance to learn

Melody - The boat that collapsed almost certainly had another problem going on. Within reason its pretty hard to destroy your boat with rig tension. If you're nervous, however, find a reputable rigger and watch as its done, as another poster suggested. Most riggers I know will welcome the opportunity to teach someone instead of just working for some faceless person who writes the check. Around here you can had a good tune done for under $100 on a simple rig. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Why Pay Anything & Self Answered...

Melody You say: "because a rigger tightened her shrouds too tight and "collasped the deck." Needless to say my enthusiasm for doing this myself has similarly collapsed." What better a reason to learn to do it yourself? Less than $100 would buy you at least four good books that would show you how to do it yourself. Great investment.

Catalina 27 Rig Tuning Articles

Since the C27 has a "standard" rig tuning should be much easier for the do-it-yourselfer. Found a page out of the H-27 Owners Manual which tells how to tune the rig at: http://www.catalina27.org/manuals/ownermanual6.jpg. However, after reading it I would prefer to have more information. Found several articles about tuning the rig on a Catalina 27 at: http://www.catalina27.org/Tech/Techindex.htm. However, several articles wouldn't open for me but one did: http://www.catalina27.org/Tech/SailtuneC27.htm. You might have to do some "work-arounds" to get the information (f.e., contacting web master, etc.). Although not adressing rig tuning I thought this link was really interesting: http://www.catalina27.org/Tech/Tomslist.htm; especially item #1 about the chainplates. Check item #10 before tightening the shrouds. Trailer Sailor had some Catalina 27 links: http://www.trailersailor.com/links2/Boats/Catalina/27/ If you ever get concerned about doing work yourself just take a look at Judy B's web page and her Catalina 27 (Impressive!!): http://www.blumhorst.com/catalina27/catalinahomepage.htm. With the appropriate research it can be done. Hope this helps to get you closer to your goal.
