Over the winter, I read an article that stated even in winds over 25 knots they could sail their 23 up wind with little more than a finger on the tiller. Does anyone have the specs for tuning the rig correctly?

If you search the archives of this site, you will find several articles on mast/rig tuning. Cliff Ruckstuhl has written several step by step items. I used his method and found it to REALLY help my weather helm. BUT If your rig is like mine you will not be able to adjust it to sail into 25 kt winds with only one finger on the tiller. I could not adjust enough rake out of the mast and my boat still has a fair amount of weather helm. The only way I could get more out is to add length to the back stay and take out length on the head stay. I don't want to spend the $$$ to do this till I have more experience. Hope this helps Ward

H-23 Mast Rake

I have found that when I move the mast forward "less rake", the boat is slow to accelerate from tacking, and slower overall. Just a few degrees more rake really wakes up the boat and allows it to accelerate quickly with only moderate weather helm in winds under 15 to 18 kts. The Hunter 23 is just not very good in winds over 18--20 kts. The only way to improve is to reef, drop your main sheet track to the low side, hard vang, cunningham, and point high to spill air. I am racing my boat most weekends, and have noticed that in moderate winds 10---18 kts the boat is very competitive. In higher winds (18+ kts) I tend to get rounded up, stalled, and fall back from the fleet. I think some of this is due to the rudder being pulled up and out of the water by the excess healing force. I have tried to reef the main or go with the 110% jib, but you may as well go home as the boat is just slow with this set up. The 23 is just not a good high wind boat. I except this fact and just try to hang on during those windy races. I remember some of you talking about adding ballast, or keel extentions, has anyone had good results???? Scott, I may be able to help with the high wind

I have raced my H23 singlehanded in wind conditions that retired other boats with crew. Having seen 8 kts on the speedo, I am now working towards the day when I can plane "Raven" like Greg S. does with "Faster" in Texas. There are a couple of tricks to sailing faster in heavy air. I don't have time to elaborate right now but if you e-mail me at oneprof@magicnet.net I will respond in a couple of days. Check with Cliff R too, he has a lot of experience with this boat.
