sailortaylor, The manual for the 222 says to take all the slack out of the stays and to make sure the mast is centered fore / aft & starbord / port. Then, tighten the upper shrouds to handtight and take up the slack on the lower shrouds, not hand tight. Both lee side shrouds will go slack under sail. This lokks incorrect, but is, according to the original manual. DO NOT tighten the shrouds while under sail, doing so may cause too much tension and will damage the hull. The rig is designed to flex a bit. I was out on my 222 in 15 - 20 knot winds last week. I reefed the main and left the jib furled. The lee shrouds were very slack, but the boat handled fine. PS...I saw another boat lose its mast that day and another lose their outboard, bracket and all. The Hudson sure can kick up a fuss! Try to avoid the temptation to over tighten. Lee
