HIN

What exactly are you looking for? The location of the HIN should be on the starboard side of the transom. If you want to know what the letters and numbers mean just let us know what they are.

what I need is access to all the data on existing #'s and status of those #'s so I can narrow it down to find the right one to engrave into the hull because there isn't one

If there isn't one, then you should not make one up and put it on the boat. That's probably not legal. If you don't know the hull number (which is sometimes the number on the sail), you're out of luck. Find some others with the same model and see if they can enlighten you.

If there is a state registration number, the DNR should help you. I had an abandoned dingy with the state number, and for 5 bucks the state DNR would give you the title info. Is your boat made in the U.S.?

they want to do a title search before they can issue one and without a title or a # they say there's nothing they can do so i need to research all available #'s for this model and see whats still out there ,whats been destroyed, sank or still in service

You are looking for a needle in a haystack that may not exist. There simply are no standards for recording this information. Hulls are destroyed all the time without any recording of the HIN. Especially smaller boats that may not have been insured.

If the boat was ever federally documented than you might be in luck. The CG may have historical records of this boat if it was documented and you have previous names and/or owners and hailing ports.

Where did you steal it from? Something sounds fishy about the boat. I'd run like hell from that one.

Start with the names of the people where you aquired the boat. The original Bill of Sale should have some manner of identifying this boat from among all of the others. Were there state registration numbers on the bow when you received the boat? Ask a state trooper how they determine if a recovered boat is the same as the boat reported stolen. If all else fails ask for a number to be assigned for a restored boat that was so badly damaged that the identification information was also distroyed.

HIN's were required for all boats after Nov 1, 1972. Your boat is older so it probably doesn't have one. The manufacturer may have assigned a hull number and some times it is reflected on the original sail number and sometimes put somewhere inside the hull.

Good Luck

Yup, missed the age on the boat. No HIN required. You should have no problem registering.

no numbers anywhere

i"ve had several people look and i contacted tom a W D Schock and he told me IF they were there where they'd be but he didnt think they would be and their records dont go back that far .the only identifying mark on the boat is a name plate of the manufacturer

HIN Number?

Just curious, why is not having the number so important in this case? At one time, no boats had the HIN number. (It's a good idea that they do now, however). If you have a notarized bill of sale, you should be ok. If you want an identifying number, you can select a number, glass it in somewhere visible, like in a locker, if you want an identifier for the future (could also put in duplicate in some hidden spot, if you are worried that the number might be removed if the boat was stolen from you). If you then sell the boat later, you could put this number on the new bill of sale. (In high school, many, many years ago, I worked for a company that was a state license agency. People would come in with home built trailers that had no identificating number. We would take a set of dies and stamp a number on the trailer, which along with other required originating documents, became the official number for that trailer....same idea here.)

I have registersed several boats that had none or I built and needed a new HID.
If the boat was produced before they required HID #s Then all you should have to do is fill out whatever Application paper work and have a Notarized bill of sale and apply for an HID. Then you can register the boat. If your state is giving you a hard time about this then find a friend in a state that know's what they are doing and have them Apply and Register in their state then "Sell" to you. I just went through this for a small daysailer here in PA. All it took was a Notarized bill of sale and the previous Registration signed over.
Whoever sold you the boat SHOULD have paper work showing they are the owners. Maybe just a state Registration card. If you bought the boat with ZERO Papers from the seller, Good luck convincing the state that it is Legal.
I would hope that if my boat is ever stolen that a person can't get it registered with out the proper Papers.

Brian

PS NOT all states issued "Titles" with boats. PA didn't start that till the 1990's I think. But there should still be a Registration card or some proof of ownership.
