On the leading edge of my dodger is a strip of 4" wide fabric that protects the sunbrella from chafe. I though it was Naugahyde but it has a dimple pattern similar to a football(american) that I don't think Naugahyde has. I think it is a synthetic as it has a woven backing.

Sorry, no photos although I will try and snap some tonight.

Anyone have an idea what this fabric is?

If you can get a little snip of it out you can learn a lot with a butane lighter. The manner in which it responds to heat . Does it shrink, melt, burn, self extinguish, is the ash/bead hard or brittle. How does it smell? these are all factors hat are used to identify a material. I would take a lttle sample, if I could get one, to some of the canvas and awning shops.

Thanks Ross, I am trying to avoid any destructive testing. I will plan on taking the whole dodger to my sail maker if I have to but thought I would try here first.

I'm pretty sure what you're looking for is called "binding" or "facing tape"........... here are the pages from Sailrite: http://search.sailrite.com/category/binding-facing-tapes-sunbrella-surlast-vinyl

That is a coated fabric. But which kind of the hundreds that are out there is the mystery.

Tim, we have something like that on the aft edge of our dodger, it almost "looks like" vinyl, but it isn't. Only thing I'm really sure of is: I have no clue what it is. A dodger maker would most likely be able to tell you, 'specially if you even know who made yours.

I use alot of that, and i'm pretty sure you mean "Shelter-Rite". Page 54 of the Sailrite catalog, 13.95 a yard, 61 inches wide. Get extra, there are lots of uses.

Yes and I would prefer to match it as I am adding to the dodger, not replacing the existing fabric.
I can mail you a piece to compare and/or send you a 4 inch by ? piece(s). Black?, though there are other colors.

It may be Stamoid too. A lot of dodger makers use Stamoid for the grab reinforcement. Ours is done in Stamoid.. Hard to tell from the pic what the texture is really like. Is the dodger on the boat or in storage? If the heat goes out again I will take a look..
