Trying to find a rim for my dinghy?

HI,

I have an old fiberglass dinghy I use to row out to my mooring. The dinghy has an inner and outer layer of fiberglass that come together around the rim. There used to be a black rim cover that wedged over the lips of the two pieces. This went all the way around the dinghy. This is gone now. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of how to either get a new rim or rig something so the rough edges don't hit my boat when I am boarding and also allow a seal.

Bond the inner and outer shells together with fiberglass and resin and then lash a nice fat rope to the gunwales. You would probably have to drill holes about every four or five inches all the way around for the lashings.

There are all kinds of trims and rubber extrusions that will work. Here is a link to one just for an example. If you have more time than money, try hitting the wrecking yards. These trims can be found all over a large wrecking yard, for cheap.
How about swim noodles or pipe insulation?

You could do like a friend of mine did to his Walker Bay and drill a few holed around the rim of the dingy after you take Ross' advise on bonding it. Once you have the rim and the holes drilled you can use swimming noodles and put them around the rim of your dingy. Attach them with Wire Ties. This is a nice no skid piece that will help when your dingy bangs into your boat.

I have seen folks use contact cement at the gunwale and glue carpeting for protection, or old cloth-type fire or water hose and Taco Marine has a number of gunwale trim pieces that you might find useful.
