Trying not to lose my "head"!

I am restoring a 1964 Grampian, and trying to rebuild the original Wilcox-Crittenden head, a "Junior" model 51. This is an all brass/bronze unit, with a porcelain bowl, and several of the internal parts are stripped or broken. I've contacted WC (anyone else see the irony in those initials?), but they've been bought out, and the new company only stocks parts for the newer, PVC model, with non-interchangable parts. Does anyone know of a source for used or NOS parts for this unit? Failing that, anyone know of a REALLY good brazier/machinist?

If it's true that W-C no longer has parts for the

older bronze toilets, it's a real tragedy! 'Cuz those toilets were build to last at least 100 years with minimal maintenance...and there are a bunch of 'em out there. Plus, the last I heard just a few months ago, W-C was still making the bronze "thrones"--the Skipper Jr and still had parts for several that were discontinued a decade or more ago. I have some management contacts at Wilcox...Give me a day or two to see what I can find out.

Thanks!

If you can shake someone loose, who knows these heads, and where to find parts, that would be great. Right now I'm trying to clean up, straighten out, and braize almost half of the components of this head. I would be better served directing all of this energy towards the really critical repairs this old girl needs. Some of the brass has become brittle, and crumbles in my hands. Good luck with your search!

Some local advice, please

Mr. Ellis, I listed my "home port" as D'ville, because that's where the boat is, but I'm actually a commercial pilot based in White Plains, NY. My flying is somewhat seasonal, and now that Winter is almost upon us, I have more free time to spend... Well, sitting at my computer for one thing. What I'd really like, is to spend my four day's off (out of fourteen) working on my boat, but I need a place to rest my weary head each night. Do you, as a local Deltavillian, know of a place nearby where I can crash? I looked at the "Dockside Inn", or something similar, and they're looking for $50+ a night, and it's too cold (and miserable) to sleep in my car. Also, if you know of any bored "sea daddys", who'd like to advise a newbie like me, please let me know!

I think I might know her

This isn't a yawl rig, Sparkman Stevens design named "Envant" by chance is she? If so, you have a beautiful vessel, I have known the previous owners for many many years and they put a lot of work into it? Congrats if this is the one I think it is. Tom Delaney C-387

En Avant it is.

Correct. She's the En Avant, formerly owned by Frank C., of Norfolk, VA. Unfortunately, I haven't had the nerve to contact him, as the broker told me he wasn't happy about selling her in the first place. Do you know any of her history? And could you tell Frank or his son Scott that I'd love to hear from them? BTW, I'm the same guy "trying not to lose his head" in another listing on this site. jonathan.mercer2@verizon.net

Jonathan the idiot

Oh hell...

Okay, I thought I was replying on another topic. I am, in fact, "loosing my head". ;)

Can't stay on the boat?

No, I don't think the yard would appreciate me setting up house, unless you guys know that this is acceptable behavior when working on your boat?

You said something that makes me wonder if you should evaluate your restoration project. Brass does not become brittle unless it is breaking down. Brass is an alloy composed of copper and zinc. When the zinc is gone, the remaining copper/ zinc is brittle. Don't want to be the bad guy but I also don't want you wasting time. You could spend it restoring somethingelse. r.w.landau
