Yea my pivot pin is worn.BUT..the question is... the hole in the keel where pin goes is worn..like way worn, more from rust and the years. so the one inch pin is slapping around in a hole that is about one and a half or less. AND, of course it is not round(the hole). Ive heard of puttin in a bushing, BUT..how do you get that bushing to stay in a hole that isnt round.....

weld

Not familiar with Cats; if my Mac had that problem I would get the hole area built up by a welder and redrill it. Then decide whether to add a bushing.

weld???

I am not sure how you can weld around fiberglass??? Catalina Direct has repair kits to do this job. You may want to check with them. If your just want to put a bushing on the keel ---clean hole up--get yourself a bushing and some epoxy--bond bushing into keel. If hole is too deformed, fill hole with a thickened slury of chopped fberglass and epoxy resign (make the mixture very thick with chopped glass). Fill hole and redrill and bond bushing in.

Weld for sure

The proper way to fix this problem is to drop the keel and take it to a machine shop and have them put in a new bushing for you. You are only talking a little bit of money for them to do that if you drop the keel your self. I don't think epoxy will hold up to the movement and 500 lb hanging on it.

Later Mac-22s have a solid cast iron keel; if the hole was too big, metal could be added to the rusted/worn area and the hole re-drilled. On a Cat, I suppose its fglass covered, so I don't know what problems it would cause to grind the glass back and heat the metal that much. It wouldn't be good for the glass/metal bond. Maybe you could describe it more for those of us unfamiliar with it?

Fiberglass only on new C-22

It has been only in the last few years that Catalina 22 swing keels are lead with a stainless steel backbone covered with fiberglass to end the maintenance problems of the bare iron keels. Tom B.'s keel is iron, as is nearly every other C-22 swing keel. Hence, ownwers must take particular care to protect the keels from rust by coating the keels with the same epoxy undercoater used on fiberglass as this is one of the only materials that definitely keeps water out. Nevertheless, Tom B.'s keel can be welded and a bushing put in. All he needs now is a freind with a tow truck. Or Tom could put out about a thousand dollars for one of the new fiberglass covered lead and stainless steel keels. But he'll still need a freind with a tow truck to go it from a Catalina dealer.

How about this:

You can find big bushings at tractor supply places. I think you could drill the keel hole out so that the bushing is a tight fit, then press it in and just stick it in place with some epoxy or caulk - once it's in the boat, it isn't going anywhere. I'd even be tempted to stick it in with some 5200, since this will be a semi-permanent fix if you do it right.
