Saw it happen once... sort of
We had/still have a Macgregor dealer here in Burlington whom I once saw take a small used boat out for a little demonstration for some prospective buyers. Coming into the launch ramp he got caught in the cross current of Assicunk Creek and the boat swept under the Pearl Street bridge. It didn't go all the way through but enough to wet half the deck and sheer off a spreader and some other rigging. Obviously the rig had to come down and as this certain salesman was wading up the launch ramp with the mast in his hand he was heard to say, 'And you see? Even the mast is light enough to carry by yourself.'Those of us on hand to see this spectacle broke out in hard laughter. I mean really-- soda came out of my nose!!(Of course this is nothing to the time when my cousin Lee, aboard a Cherubini 44 running late to make the Annapolis show, actually climbed to the top of the mast and LEANED OVER TO TIP THE BOAT on a rising tide going under the Cape May Canal bridge... but that's another story!)JC 2
