Trump Companion 21 Punta Gorda
Greeting all! I am about to embark on a full refit of a Trump Companion 21 and will be looking for advice along the way. My first order of business is to replace all of the toe rail as the the plastic angle under the teak has been broken and is missing on much of the boat. I am contemplating replacing the teak with an aluminum "T" track, but have yet to find a reasonably priced source. Any suggestions if aluminum is the right way to go, or should I just find a replacement for the plastic angle and then cut new teak?

Hi Ted.
Two things stood out in your post and they had nothing to do with orange hair.

1, I am contemplating replacing the teak with an aluminum "T" track, but have yet to find a reasonably priced source.
Aluminum toe rail track is expensive. The only way that you can get around that is to check out a yacht/sailboat used salvage yard.

2, then cut new teak?
If you think ali track is expensive try and source teak.

In this case to keep the costs down I would try to reuse as much as you can

RE: all of the toe rail as the the plastic angle under the teak has been broken

Could post a photograph of this setup so we can come up with some (reasonably priced ) alternatives

All the best
Gary

While reading your message title I thought this thread was going to get political. :yikes:
It did. But not any more. And yes, the joke was obvious and shared by several. :)

Let's not go down the political path, and help @tedsteffan with his boat.

Thanks.

I pulled the teak cap rail off my ‘84 Irwin 38’ and glassed over the hull deck joint. I had spent a fortune maintaining the teak and it always looked horrible within a few months. I’m very happy with my decision.

I also removed the teak rub rail and installed new chain plates to replace the original encapsulated version. It makes docking more exciting but I’m leaning new techniques to avoid crashing into the piping’s as I come in.

Thanks for the initial feedback - and sorry, wasn't trying to make this political :)
There is actually no relationship between the former president and the manufacture of my little boat.

Hi, Ted. I have the same boat as you which I sailed for years on lake erie. After upgrading to a Victoria Frances 26 and retiring my Companion 21 to a life behind my garage 6 years ago, I missed her so much that I took off the tarp this past weekend, cleaned her up and put her back in the water 2 days ago. She is an excellent sailor and has saved me from myself countless times. I'd love to hear more about your boat sometime. Years ago I communicated with Aborn Smith's widow and she sent me some literature and a postcard pic from an owner sailing his in the Bahamas. The worst part about owning this boat is that there's so few around that there's no one to compare notes with. Every few years I'd Google it but saw nothing new until your post. Best of luck with the refit. Jason
