CAPTAIN JOHN EDWARDS

So many times I see on this site people wishing to go cruising or spending more time on their boats. They always seem to have a list of why nots or will do's for the future tomorrows. Well, I have made a business of cashing in on peoples tomorrows and why nots. My wife and I opened a sail charter business on Cape Cod. It sort of forced us to go sailing because we were being paid for it and to upkeep the boat. Guess what? At first it was a chore with licenses and insurances and all the headaches that go along making a new business grow. But we have benefited far more then any of our guests. Our tomorrows never seemed to arrive our social calendar took precedents over the boat. However, the boat has become a place of spiritual solitude,(*chapel like), our friends and guest return time and time again to be bathed in the solice of sailing and the feeling of being part of creation and feeling its breath fill the sails and ones lungs. Even when we are not on the boat friends and even strangers aide in the care and enjoyment. If lines are lose a helping hand tightens them. If a friend needs solice they drive down and have coffee on the boat. Those of us that have sailboats are truly blessed even with the headaches they cause but the benefit they instill surpasses all their problems. If any one thinks we are daft let me know. But I have some hard facts. This month alone our little business had over 4000 hits. as of today our charters for the month of July are booked out. SO is the first week of August. A four day sail race in May to Nantucket is also paid and booked. We just received a booking for a sail in June. The message here... if you have a sailboat use it; for yourself and others. We dont get fat on the profits, they're slim but we do give regularly to charities. Ain't sailing great.

Hunter 25' Cherub.

No mooring, just bought the boat, looking for one presently, difficult! My home port (Plymouth, MA) is my preference however I have to wait 7 years! Duxbury is the closest mooring however they only have flat moorings and I'm afraid of damage. Sandwich has a 15 year wait! I am looking at Marion and New Bedford, I like that area because it's easily acessible to Martha's Vinyard. Good luck on the upcoming season! Mark in Plymouth

Mooring problems...huge!

The mooring availibility in Massachusetts (esp. Cape are) is extremely limited. As a result, I have had a 23' swing keel kells in my backyard for almost 2 years w/out a buyer! The boat is extremely clean and w/ a 3 yr. old 6hp ls. ob. Asking $1700 (this is not an add).... Everyone that looks, comes back saying...no where to put it! There are absolutely no moorings anywhere down here with a 7-8year waiting list. As a result, those that have a mooring will put anything on it, just to keep it.

NOT TRUE ON THE MOORING FACTOR

i REALISE OWNERSHIP OF MOORINGS ON THE CAPE IS EXPENSIVE BUT ONE CAN RENT. SO THERE IS NO EXCUSE. PERSERVERANCE IS KEY

Moorings in New England

Capn, You are right about the moorings. They are hard to find but, they are out there. This season I'm moving my boat from Rhode Island to the Cape area. I have found two moorings that are fairly reasonable and available!!

Where in the 'Cape Area'

Scott, Where are you finding leal moorings? At least in Dennis, Harwich, Chatham and Wellfleet it is illegal to rent moorings, (boats have to be matched to moorings by permit holder) and the shortest wait list I know is two years. Just curious. Roger
