Have recently relocated [with my boat] from Annapolis, to LaConner, WA, and need to register boat. Use tax is 8% ... I am wondering what your thoughts are on REAL value of above-mentioned model/length. I look on the boats for sale classifieds, and the list prices are, IMHO, inordinately high. Can anyone give me insights on some SOLD values for this particular model? Or please tell me where I can find SOLD info? Tried to register boat today [before weekend] and couldn't answer these basic questions. I want ot be as "honest" as possible, but certainly realistic, i.e., my boat is modestly fair to good conidition, with a few added amenities, but missing a few as well ... Thanks in advance for any inisghts.

try boat dealer

I have an 89 myself and recently went through this. I contacted a sailboat dealer and they have access to a data base of listed and sold boats and their prices across the country. I then located the boats in this area that were listed or sold and checked with the dealer websites to see the condition and equipment. I arrived at $28,000 for this area.

If you register your boat nationaly with the U.S. Coastguard you don't have to with the state. About $145. the first year but about $35. yr. for the following years. Check into it. John

Uh, John, not entirely true. Since my boat is Documented with the USCG I'm not required to 'Register' it in CT. I am however required to get a certificate of number. Exactly the same paperwork, cost, taxes as registery. Only difference is I don't have a bunch of numbers on the bow, and the annual CT sticker is a different color. Also, after the first year documentation renewal is free. Just complete the form they send you and return it. Documentation is still a good idea Dee if you might sail up to Canada (though I doubt our northern neighbors really care). Check with whoever is responsible for boat registrations in Washington, if they don't require documented vessels to be registered, go for it. Be forwarned though, it can take 4-5 months for the Coast Guard to process your application. The National Vessel Documentation Center's homepage is:

2005 ABOS has: 30' 1" 11' 4'3" 9500 disp. 433 sq ft sail 18D 15,400. low 18,900. high resale = 24,400.00 with all repairs. Soldboats.com is a paid subscription, 430 annual, gives the price and what the yacht sold for. Brokers and surveyors have this service and normally do not give the findings away as it is a bread & butter deal. Yachtworld.com is a good source and is a source for soldboats, lots of stats, pics and boats around the world there. Nadaguides is a good source for smaller boats, espec trailer & ski boats.

True Value/CG vs. State registration

If you register your boat nationaly with the U.S. Coastguard you don't have to with the state. About $145. the first year but about $35. yr. for the following years. Check into it. -------------- The above is not entirely accurate. The initial price is close. If the boat had been documented and was re-sold it is about $92 to change the documentation. There is no annual fee for renewing the documentation. Each state has its own laws regarding titling/registration, etc. Most (not all) still reuqire a CG documented boat to be registered with the state primarily so the state can make sure it gets its sales/use tax and registration fees.

Boat uS

The Boat US web site offers a link for boat values. Ck their site and look for boat valuation or such. You don't have to be a member to get the quote. It will most likely be the lowest around since it is what they base the insured / loan value on.

Thanks for all your leads to answering question!

Thanks to everyone for resources I hadn't known about! Indeed, I found the information, which "armed" me for my visit to the vessel registration office. I found I could really make a legitimate case for the condition/value of my boat, but ended up not needing all of that. I was asked to mark one of two boxes regarding condition ... no further questions ... I paid $149.25 for registration and nothing else!
