AC ref.

Good day Chuck711 Seanshine is partly correct with his inverter. Two years ago I helped a fellow sailor in Australia with the same problem. First you have an AC refig. to get it to work on DC you will need to get an inverter with the correct voltage and Wattage rating for the Refig. input amps and wattage. Then you will need to use the Power fomular in electronics. P=IxE. P= wattage of the refig. I= current of the Refig. and E= the voltage of the refig. Using this formular you will be able to calculate how many AMPs of DC you will need to feed the inverter to supply the refrig. To get the correct power into the inverter you will need to use the power rating of the Refrig. I'll bet you will need about 75 to 100 amps of DC to run the inverter and refrig. as there are many losses of amps in the inverter through heat etc. The Sailor in Australia had a one hp refrig. motor. when all was said and done he need to have between 75 and 100 amps of DC to run his AC refrig. in his boat. The component line will be: Batteries to inverter to refrig. You should have gotten a solid state refrig. that runs on 12 volts DC. much simpler. I hope that this helps, you will need a bunch of batteries. Fair winds AL

Check the voltage at the 12V

connection. It may have a burnt fuse or there might be a voltage drop in the circuit. Check all connections. I'm not familiar with your model, or wether it has dual voltage capability or not so my advise is assuming it does. It seems some of the older Catalinas used these fridges as OME.

Unplug AC

If you are sure it IS wired to the 12v system, try unpluging from AC. Also check for a panel switch.

You may want to contact them for help. I am guessing that some electronic part has gone south, if it was working before. It must be some type of a relay that allows the box to run on AC and switch to DC once the AC is removed.

Sounds like a problem a fellow sailor had...

Turned out to be a simple relay that failed so it wouldn't switch between AC and DC. I agree with Steve Dion -- probably something simple. Except for getting to it to repair it, naturally.

Wow Great Response Thanks for all the suggestions

Wow Great Response Thanks for all the suggestions. Also for the Link to the installation Manual! Chuck

AC/DC

If you have a true AC/DC unit you should not need an inverter. It is wired separatly to the DC side of the distribition panel and should kick on automatically when the AC is disconnected. I have one on my boat, not the same model and I don not have an inverter. True if the unit is only AC you will need one.
