Lowering the mast the mast raising pole kept leaning to starboard and finally it bent pulling rivets anchored at the base of the the mast.Repaired but in raising mast, preparitory to launching yesterday, the *@#** pole bent again abut 1/4, or maybe less, of the way up and again pulling the rivets out. Seems like the pole is not designed for the job Any comments? John

maybe this

I had this problem, though to a lesser degree (I bent the pole somewhat and "stretched" the mast base fitting it goes into. As it turns out, I should not have used my winch to hoist up the mast -- there was too much distance from the winch to the anchor locker where the block clips in and as a re3sult the stretched line allowed the pole to sway a little bit. Instead, I should ahve hoisted it up using the block system and a stronger back (or a closer winhc to prevent the stretched line). That keeps everything taut and avoids the stretched line which allowed the mast pole to swing and sway which may have been what got you in trouble. Better luck next time.

Post this in the small boats forum and it...

should not have happened if your lines were all tight and properly set up. Check the manuel, ask a person with the same boat or dealer to help. Is this the first time you have raised and lowered the mast? You should have the the gin pole set into the base of the mast perpendicular plus tilted ten degrees towards the top of the mast with the jib sheet tightened and the jib sheet rope clutch engaged and the jib sheet cleated off on the mast (double protection). The main sheet block is then attached to the gin pole at one end and an attachment in the anchor locker at the other end. Using a winch should not have caused this damage if set up properly, I have used the winch but found it unneccesary. The winch or another holding the main sheet does provided extra protection thought. The gin pole if properly tensioned by the jib halyard will be provided counter tension keeping it a few degrees off perpendicular towards the masthead. Rich sounds like he used the trailer winch to raise or lower the mast. Like he said don't. Also I have a 26, same basic setup but lacking the mast struts which should have also prevented side to side movement. Could the struts be misalligned? I don't know if they need to be adjusted during raising and lowering. Good luck! Make sure your mast is still safe. Check this link. alan
