Hello all, I'm having trouble with the main on my '94 H26. I can raise it about 85% of the way, then it stops. There is not a kink or obstruction on the halyard anywhere that is visible at any time, I have lubed and check the slugs. When it stops, if I go to the mast where the halyard exits on the way to the turning block, it is tight there. This all tells me that the trouble is in the mast either on the way up or the way down. Any suggestions? anyone have this happen? I'd like to have some ideas before I drop the mast. Additionally, this is the first time I've splashed this year due to some previous "issues" since resolved, so I can't tell you when whatever happened happened. Thank you all!

Heres a suggestion..

try removing the top two slides from the mainsail, tie them together with a piece of strong line and a cloth dipped in sillicone, attach the haylard to the top slide, and a line to the bottom slide. Pull this up and down the track to the top of the mast and back down a few times to clear the track. Good luck.

Once in a while, a slide on my mainsail will snag the mast gate fitting.

On other occasions, lubrication helped (as Lansend suggested). Also, heading the boat directly into the wind makes rasising sail easier.

Raising main

Spiders like to built little nests inside the track . Part of my annual pre splash was to really clean inside the track . The other problem I ran into was I replaced some slugs near the top and found that the sail track is wider at the bottom and the new slugs were just a bit thicker than the old stock ones and that caused me a problem , good luck Mike

Is your BOOM VANG tight?

Years ago, I couldn't get my main to go up that last 15%. If I would have had enough strength, I would have ripped the main in two. I was pulling with all of my might. The buddy sailing with me noticed the BV was tight. I didn't think it was really a problem but I loosened it anyway. The main went up with no trouble. The BV is always slack before I attempt to raise the main. Good luck, Mike

OK thanks so far...

Thanks all, but Landsend gets the prize! ran the empty slugs up with some lube and cleared something. Got the main 99.5% of the way up! I was able to sail and get some sail trim, but the darn thing won't get the last 6-8" of the way up. This leaves me a little pocket of loose sail at the front (is that leach or luff?)just above the gooseneck. any further suggestions? Oh, and thanks Mike H, but the vang was not the culprit. Good try though!
