I finally broke down and replaced my two new (but dead) 4D and two 6 volts deep cycle bateries with 12 Trojan 6 volt bateries. No you didn't read it wrong. I really did install 12 batteries. I used the T135 with a amp-hour rating of 235. It turns out you can nicely fit 6 under the Starboard Setee and 6 under the port inboard setee. It took a little bit of planning to get all the wiring correct. You may ask why. Well I had just gone through my second set of 4Ds in a little of 4 years and always seemed to be running out of battery power. A fully fitted 450 is a bit of a power hog and I hate running the generator all the time. So I opted for a full 1400 Amp-hours. I be testing the new system out over the next few weeks. Those that are interested can email me directly or watch for the update in a few weeks.

let me know

Shawn, let me know how it goes. I've decided to do the same thing. The key for me is to simply have the assurence that power will be available in all situations. I think me boat will be bristling with solar charges though.

Fuse Fuse Fuse

Be sure you have installed fuses or circuit breakers at your batteries. I feel sure your conductors will not carry the short circuit current your batteries can supply.

What will you use

to keep all those batteries charged? If your charging ability is not increased, it won't matter how many batteries you install, your charging time won't change and if you continually remove more from the batteries than you replace, you will ruin them. Most manufactures of batteries and charging equipment recommend that your charging capacity is equal to 25% of your battery capacity. I must admit, with all those amp hours, your could certainly light up the neighborhood for a long time.

Fuses fuses and more fuses

I didn't mention that in the earlier email but you are absolutely correct. The entire system is has several fuses that prevent a massive load from blowing out my electronics.

To borrow a line from the movie "Stripes"

I wanna raft up with you, dude! I thought it was the North Star I saw here in Northern Illinois tonight, but it must have been your anchor light beaming in from Cherry Cove!

Big Generator

I have a lot of generating capacity on board. My problem in the past has been that I had to turn every electrical device on the boat on just to give the generator a little bit of a work out. I might need to put a slightly large inverter/charger on the boat. the current one only puts out a 100 amps per hour. I am also considering attaching some electrical plugs on the out side of the boat so that all my new palls can get juiced! :)
