Trojan batteries

Just found out I have a source for used but decent trojan t-105 batteries.Just wondering the pro's and cons of having 2 of them in parallel.My present house bank is 2 ea 12V 105 AH deep cycle batteries.I think the t-105's are 105 AH but will check Trojans site to verify specs.Looks to me like they would require alot of maintence verses sealed batteries.

Chuck, Trojans are fine, not the very best but servicable. Cleaning the posts, shooting a bit of distilled water in the cells? Whats not fun there?You can ask battery cos for "Blemished Batts" or blems, new but 1/2 price, shouldn't give out these 'secrets'....;-)

little confused though " FLINT STONE " ???i,LL SHARE MY TIPS WITH EVERYONE. Might not work for everyone, b ut i have a contact at a goulf course that replaces the batterie in theri entire fleet yearly, so thje trojans aren rarely over a year old and the price is really right. .. lol usually saves them $$$ for disposal fees.Happy sailing;

Who would want to buy

220ah batteries that can be carried easily by one person, are inexpensive,and last a long time. That is stupid, I would never have them on my boat. Fred there is no secret to let out. The idea of someone putting them on their boat is really dumb. You have to go out and buy AGM type and spend 4 times the moneyFair WindsCap'n Dave

I go to a battery Mfg. that has an outlet store for batteries. I have a little conversation with who ever is at the counter. Then I say I have a sailboat that has no way to recharge the battery while at sea. I have a trickle charger at the dock that I can plug to the battery. They ask me what size battery box do I have. If I say "I don't know but it is big", they say follow me. I go and see thousands of batteries on shelves. They are all black and have no labels on them. He will say will this one fit? and it's real big and I say yes. OK I'll get it ready. I go back to the store area and it comes out with a label that will say "reconditioned" or "Blem". He tells me it's a deep cycle and says you should think about a very small solar panel and let the sun keep it charged. I pay him about $35.00 and carry it to the boat. I do this about every three years and have plenty of power to run my radios, stereo CD player and lights and now my autopilot. I get good service at about $12.00 a year. I once went four years but I think it's taking a chance. I don't know what they sell me but looking at the size they are big and heavy and they work. In retail stores I see prices like $89.00 for the size deep cycle batteries like I get. Don't know if they are used or new. But this year they did ask if I wanted them to take it to my truck.

T105's

T105's are great batteries but you'll want to run two of them in series for a 12V bank not parallel. If you parallel two 6V T105's you'll still only have a six volt system. Two T105's will give you a 225 amp hour bank. YYour current bank, of 12V batteries, will give you 210ah. The difference is that the T105's are designed to be deeply cycled and will out live a standard 12v deep cycle by a long shot. For what it's worth one of my old boats is still using the Sam's Club 6v batteries I installed 7 years ago and they are still in perfect working order. Not bad for $46.00 each...

Well, I guess they saw me coming. I got taken.

While replacing the house bank (2 - 6V GC batteries) on my friends boat I went to the local 'battery store' where they sold me 2 GC-15 (I think) batteries for about $250. I wish I knew of a store like Chuck R. is talking about in the Tidewater section of Maryland and for that matter in my area in southern NY. 'Blem's it is from now on if I can only find out where to get them. Any ideas in either area?I have been using WM to get my 12V deep cycle batts at $100 a pop and my friend re-imbursed me for his batteries. This is one component where they really can sock it to you at retail.

Just make sure..

Just make sure you have a good charge controller for that solar panel or you could really damage those batteries..

Chuck, start with basics.

Depending on your type of sailing, do you need the extra amp storage capacity provided by the T-105's. If your answer is "yes", by all means consider them but if it is "no" why carry the extra weight, added maintenace and loss of space.

Benny the math has been done and he'll only pick up 15ah by switching from his current st up to T105's. The T105's actually have a smaller foot print than most 12V group batteries and are only slightly taller. The OP stated he was already using TWO 12V batteries so as long as he can fit the slightly taller height of the T105 then there is no worry other than weight. The main advantage of using 6V over 12V is that of longevity/cost per ah and the ability to with stand more abuse than a battery with much thinner plates like a 12V. The weight difference, on any boat over 18 feet, is negligible and should not even be a concern. 6V batteries save money in the long run...
