Triple Y Valve

I have been thinking of an installation that would allow for direct discharge offshore, pump-out offshore, and pump-out @ station. I found it illustrated on the boatus site as detailed by Don Casey. Photo attached. What do you think of this set-up. In thinking about it before seeing the illustration, my thoughts I have concern for all those y-valves and potential for clogging.

I only see two y-valves...

One in the head discharge line ahread of the tank...one in the tank pumpout line. It's a fairly common installation. However, when possible, I'd rather see two discharge ports in the tank instead of a y-valve in the tank discharge line...and it's not hard to do in most tanks, with a little doodad called the Uniseal, which you can get here: http://www.aussieglobe.com/avs96.htm It works a bit like a molly bolt.

Emptying Tank

Your reference to "pump out" offshore confused me. What we want to do is use a macerator and empty the tank offshore, not pump it out as we would at a dock. I chartered one boat, a 48 foot Benneteau that had a holding tank in the bow and gravity drained while offshore. Otherwise, all the yachts I sail use a macerator to empty the holding tank. I just bought a Hunter 260 and it has no ability to empty the tank at sea. Rats. Your post has been quite helpful.

holding tank setup

The link is to a phot forum article installing about the setup you describe. It has been in My H33 for almosst 6 years and works well. It doesn't use a macerator and if paper is kept out of the holding tank, doesn't need one. Gravity drains the tank fine offshore. Forespar diverter valve shown has a weak handle and one has broken, replaced with a much stronger new model now made by the company.

No need to avoid flushing toilet paper

That is, unless you insist on using premium brands like Charmin, White Cloud, etc. "Marine" TP (which is just cheap flimsy quick-dissolve TP at an inflated price) breaks up before it even makes it into the tank and dissolves completely within an hour...it will not clog a macerator pump.

Right, I can count

I was counting the seacock as a valve. The tank is a bladder & below water line. Uniseal looks like its for solid wall tanks. Intended to use a macerator. But that would still require a second Y-valve if I want to stay w/one discharge seacock, yes?
