There was a race Saturday. Here is the path of one of the boats due to incredibly shifty and variable winds to let you know just how squirrely things were.
It varied from 0-10 kts with gusts. You could be sailing a beam reach and suddenly and it would come around to your bow. If you didn't change course, you were suddenly head to wind! Or sometimes you were screaming along and suddenly the little wind ripples would stop and your sails hung limp and shapeless. If you found a nice dark patch, the wind could change directions three times inside of it. Reading the water was painful!
I assume the wind was light enough that it just tumbled.
Being short handed, I had gotten tired of retrimming (I have limited sail controls such as no traveler) so I just started letting the wind decide my course.
