I am assuming the reason the mains are so far out is the boats are way overpowered. Is this correct?

Possibly they're over-powered, but it'smore likely
that they're about to round the weather mark and have slightly overstood. You can see the bow person on the leading boat under the jib, and it appears that he is getting ready for the hoist. Although as you noted, the mains are well out, they are still full and don't appear to be flogging or to have a bubble near the mast as would be true if they were eased that far out due to being overpowered. A better question would be why is the jib in so tight when the main is so far out, and a possible answer is to help blow the bow down as the boats round the mark. Steve Alchemist C-320

I think they have just rounded a mark and what your looking at is a frozen second in time where the boats are in flux. Notice the telltale on the red sail - it is streaming. It appears the rail meat is still getting in position. Shortly after this picture was taken they will be sheeting in the mainsail to trim for closehaul. The jib is already set. Alan and Stu plus other regulars to the forum - what do you think?

I see both boats w/ their spin pole up, although the Volvo boat is either tardy or quicker, depending if these boats are in the process of a hoist or drop, respectively. If it is a bear-away set (and not a douse), it appears as though crew on each boat are in the process of bringing a bag up to the bow, have raised their pole and have eased out their main. The Corona boat has their bowman in place, probably asking in no uncertain terms "what the *&%^$# hold-up is?". The Volvo boat appears to have crew scrambling mid-ship w/ the spin bag (I think that's what that is...), but I see no evidence of a bowman. As to 'Movie Magic', is there a 3rd boat trailing these two that's been (mostly) wiped clean? What boat is flying the section of sail seen in the sliver between the mainsail leach of the Volvo boat and the luff of the headsail on the Corona boat? Should be clear sky but it's not. Can't figure this one out. Good stuff!

Perhaps they've both dropped the traveller to handle a gust? It's hard to imagine they both would have let the main out in advance of the windward mark... they would be giving up too much speed unnecessarily. Perhaps the trailing boat would slow to come inside of the leader on the rounding but I don't see why the leader would slow himself down. (of course it's been a while since I've been racing) Wouldn't the main typically go out while rounding and deploying the chute.
