When motoring my 1994 40.5, the stern sinks noticeably below the water; about 6-8". Is this common to the 40.5? When walking on the side decks, creaking can be heard. Is this a concern?

40.5 stern sinking

hey larry, i've got a '93 40.5 and my stern does the same thing, i don't know why, but i don't like it either. i moved my batteries, run with half fuel, and have practically nothing in the lockers, although i do have a generator. i can't comment on the side deck creaking. take care, Jim Vincent, Toucan

Squat on 40.5's

Yes, mine does too as does another owner's. I have two banks of 6 vt golf cart batteries and an inverter. His has a generator. But, a Catalina 42 near me does the same thing, so maybe a property of big sterns with lots of aux. power? Come to think of it, so does a certain trawler I know...RD

squats

All displacement boats get the squats when they throw a bow wave. It's just a lot more noticable on boats with sugar scoop transoms or swim platforms. Guys with canoe sterns or wineglass transoms tend not to worry about such things because they can't see what's going on back there. If the aft tanks are full on my 410 and the boat is not heeled, my swim step is completely awash at 7 knots. While I wish they'd designed it with a couple more inches of clearance, it's not something I lose a lot of sleep about.

Squatting

My 430 and all other boats I've seen does the same thing. Just got back from a cruise, and the Nordic Empress does the same thing at eighteen knots.
